California City Wants to Defy State, Protect Babies From Abortions

Leaders of the City of San Clemente in California want to make a bold statement about the value of unborn babies as their state leaders push to expand abortions.

The Epoch Times reports the city council initially planned to consider a pro-life resolution Aug. 16 to declare San Clemente a “sanctuary for life” and condemn the killing of unborn babies in abortions. However, Mayor Gene James scheduled a special meeting for Saturday to consider removing the proposal from the meeting agenda after it attracted national attention, the San Clemente Times reports.

“The ultimate purpose of government is to protect the life and liberty of humans including unborn individuals,” Councilman Steve Knoblock, who proposed the resolution, told The Epoch Times.

The resolution supports the U.S. Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and recognizes that human life begins at conception.

“We believe that life is God-ordained and God is the author and finisher of every life,” the resolution states. “[A]s a city council, we will protect and sustain life at every stage.”

It also points out that “the Constitution does not forbid a state or county or city … from expressing a preference for normal childbirth instead of abortion.”

Knoblock said he hopes the resolution will help reverse the pro-abortion trend in California.

However, the proposal has received pushback from some city council members and abortion activists. Councilmember Kathy Ward described the pro-life resolution as “ludicrous” in a comment to Eyewitness News 7, and a local Planned Parenthood spokesperson urged the city council to reject it.

A resolution is a statement, not legislation, so the measure would have no legal effect if it passes. However, it still would send a message to state lawmakers like Gov. Gavin Newsom who are working directly with the abortion industry to expand the killing of unborn babies in abortions and force taxpayers to pay for their deaths.

California has forced taxpayers to pay for elective abortions for many years, and young girls can get abortions without their parents’ knowledge or consent. A new law slated to go into effect next year will force all state colleges and universities to provide abortions on campus.

More than 100,000 unborn babies are aborted in California every year, according to the Guttmacher Institute.
