Steamers Advance To The Championship Game, Will Battle The River Bandits Saturday Night

Edenton, NC – The Edenton Steamers defeated the Greenbrier Knights 10-0 in the PCL semi-finals Thursday night. The Steamers advance to the championship game on Saturday night at Tarboro Municipal Stadium, after the River Bandits also won a semi-final game tonight. In 26 games at Historic Hicks Field in 2022, the Steamers went 21-5 in front of their home fans. 

Edenton got ahead early in the second inning. Jeremiah Boyd and Tate Abbott singled to begin the inning. Hunter Cole roped an RBI single into right field to give the Clams the lead. It was 1-0 Edenton heading to the third. 

The Steamers put a couple more across in the third inning. Tanner Thach rolled an RBI single into right field to score Bryce Stephens. Jeremiah Boyd grounded into a double play that brought another run home from third. Edenton led by three runs, after three innings. 

The game broke open in the sixth for Edenton. Stephens hit a sacrifice fly out to center field to score Cole. Later in the inning, Chase Bruno singled home two more runs to grow the lead. After six innings, Edenton led 7-0. 

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Tanner Thach finished things off with a three-run bomb to deep right field. This gave Edenton double-digit runs for the 12th time this season. 

Nicky Wohleking’s start on the mound was the story of the game. The southpaw rolled through the Knights lineup, pitching 8.0 shutout innings. The lefty from Chowan University struck out four, allowed just two hits, and only one walk. The Steamers went 7-2 in games that Wohleking started this season. The Clams took home the win, 10-0.

This game marked the first postseason victory for Edenton since 2017. It also pushes the Clams into their first league championship game since 2015, when the Steamers won the Petit Cup in the Coastal Plain League. The game will be at Tarboro Municipal Stadium on Saturday, August 6th, at 7:00 pm.
