‘Step up’ – Bergwijn appears to take small dig at Tottenham after sealing Ajax switch

Steven Bergwijn has claimed he has taken a ‘step up’ in his career by joining Ajax, leaving Tottenham following a two-year stay. 

The Netherlands international sealed a move to the Eredivisie side last week after a tricky stint at Spurs which saw him fail to work his way into the consistent starting line-up. 

Now back in his homeland and playing for the team he turned out for as a youth player, Bergwijn believes joining Ajax is a move forward for him.

The 24-year-old told the official Ajax website: “I was a bit shocked. I didn’t see it coming, actually. 

“But yeah I was getting left out of the team there and of course you just want to play. So if you can go back to Ajax it’s quite tempting. They always do well in the league and the Champions League. So, it’s a step up for me.”

Bergwijn slipped down the pecking order at Tottenham last season and was used infrequently, with most of his appearances coming from the bench. 

However, he cropped up with one of the best moments of the campaign after coming off the bench to score twice in second-half stoppage time to earn Spurs a last-gasp win at Leicester in January. 

Spurs Web Opinion 

Bergwijn is clearly happy with leaving Spurs and it is no surprise given he was not going to be earning regular game time going forward. 

But the one thing he will be looking forward to is playing in all, if not most games for Ajax and having a prominent role after his diminished position at Spurs.
