Report: Tottenham inserted a buy-back clause when selling player in 2020
The Athletic have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur inserted a £30m buy-back clause in the agreement that saw Kyle Walker-Peters switch to Southampton two years ago.
Walker-Peters has been a revelation since making the move to the South Coast in 2020, with the right-back even breaking into the England set-up last season.
Spurs are thought to be on the lookout for a new right wing-back this summer, with the club reportedly hopefully of agreeing on a deal with Middlesbrough for Djed Spence (Evening Standard).
The Athletic have now stated that Tottenham have the option to buy back Walker-Peters for £30m.
The report states that Southampton do not want to sell the Tottenham academy graduate this summer but they may have to plan to potentially lose the 25-year-old in the future.
It is explained that Walker-Peters’ current deal at St Mary’s runs till 2025 and there has been no progress regarding talks over a new deal.
The Athletic claim that Walker-Peters has no shortage of suitors, with Manchester United and Arsenal said to be among the list of the right-back’s admirers.

If Tottenham had received any indication from Walker-Peters’ camp that he would be open to returning to the club this summer, then I suspect they would have prioritised signing the 25-year-old over Spence.
Perhaps, Spurs will explore Walker-Peters’ situation again next summer. The reported buy-back clause would give the Lilywhites a major advantage over other suitors.
