Houthis Say 17 People In Yemen’s Saada Were Killed Or Wounded By Saudi Border Guards
On July 10, the Houthis (Ansar Allah) said that 17 people were killed or wounded in the northern Yemeni province of Saada as a result of an attack by Saudi border guards.
A security official of the group told the Sanaa-based Saba News Agency that the attack took place in the district of Razih which is located right on the border line with Saudi Arabia. The unnamed source said that the wounded were taken to the district’s main hospital. According to him, most of the wounded are in a critical condition.
The circumstances of the attack are still unknown. The victims may have attempted to sneak into Saudi Arabia which provoked the Kingdom’s border guards to respond with lethal force.
Saada is the heartland of the Houthis that the Saudi-led coalition has been bombing since 2015 in support of Yemen’s beleaguered government.
The Houthis considered the attack a violation of the UN-sponsored ceasefire in Yemen. The ceasefire entered into effect on April 2 and was set to end on June 2. However, it was extended at the very last day for two more months.
Despite the seriousness of the Saudi border guards attack, the Houthis will not likely respond. The group does not appear to be interested in a new military confrontation in Yemen, neither does the Saudi-led coalition. The UN is already trying to take advantage of this situation to further extend the ceasefire in the war-torn country.
