Ajax head coach claims Bergwijn has shown ‘ambition’ to leave Spurs

Speaking to Ajax media, head coach Alfred Schreuder shared his delight at the signing of Steven Bergwijn from Tottenham.

Bergwijn was officially announced as an Ajax player on Friday morning. The 24-year-old signed a five-year contract with the Dutch champions.

Bergwijn, who has six goals in 22 appearances for the Dutch national side, returns to the Eredivisie having previously played 149 games for Ajax’s rivals PSV Eindhoven (TransferMarkt).

However, the Amsterdam-born forward spent six years in the Ajax academy before joining their rivals in 2011 and Schreuder was clearly satisfied with the player’s return home (TransferMarkt).

Speaking to Ajax media, he said: “It is indicative of Steven’s ambition that he chose to make the step to Ajax.

“He is a player with many qualities. He has enormous drive and is also very goal-oriented. Of course, I am happy that we were able to sign him, he adds new quality to our team.”

Bergwijn struggled to fully cement his place in the starting eleven during his time at Spurs, making just four starts in the Premier League last season (TransferMarkt).

Often hampered by injury, meaning he was not able to string a run of games together (TransferMarkt), he could not break into Antonio Conte’s front three.

I really hope that Stevie rips it up in Holland. He provided Spurs fans with some great moments, namely his debut delight against Manchester City and the last-gasp brace against Leicester City this season – which was crucial in the quest for Champions League qualification. From the coach’s comments, I am sure that he will be treasured at his new club.
