British Prime Minister Announces Resignation

Following a wave of ministerial resignations over the previous two days, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced his resignation as the head of the Conservative Party and stepping down as prime minister on Thursday, July 7.

Over the previous 24 hours, dozens of ministers in Johnson’s cabinet resigned as the prime minister was ultimately exposed by a series of scandals.

The scandal that eventually brought his nearly three-year tenure to an end was sparked by his decision to promote a politician, Chris Pincher, to a position of authority while knowing Pincher had been the subject of a sexual harassment allegation.

At the time of his resignation speech, at least 59 Johnson’s ministers had left their positions—roughly half of his cabinet.

Johnson stated that he is appointing new Cabinet members today and that he will remain in office until his successor is in place.

“It is clearly now the will of the parliamentary Conservative Party that there should be a new leader … and therefore a new prime minister,” Johnson said.

He expressed gratitude to the voters who brought him an election victory in December 2019 and said he had fought calls to resign.

Johnson was reportedly planning to serve as a caretaker until early October, according to a recent BBC article, but he is already facing pressure to quit far sooner.
