"To one and all -- thank you for your precious prayers," Carlos Santana posted. "Forgot to eat and drink water, so I (was) dehydrated and passed out."
Carlos Santana is “doing well” one day after collapsing on stage during a concert in the Detroit area, according to an update posted Wednesday on his Facebook page.
“Rock Legend Carlos Santana was over-taken by heat exhaustion and dehydration during a concert Tuesday (July 5) evening in Michigan,” the post on the longtime Bay Area music star’s Facebook page read. “The guitar great was taken from his show at Pine Knob Music Theatre, an outdoor amphitheater in Clarkston, some 40 miles northwest of Detroit, Michigan. Carlos was taken to the emergency department at McLaren Clarkston for observation and is doing well.”
The post was attributed to Santana’s manager Michael Vrionis.
The 74-year-old Woodstock veteran collapsed at around 10 p.m. and was treated on stage by medical personal, who “asked fans in attendance to pray for Santana, who is receiving serious medical attention,” NBC’s Detroit news affiliate WDIV-TV reported.
It was unclear at the time what was ailing the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, known for such late ’60s/early ’70s classic rock favorites as “Oye Como Va” and “Evil Ways,” as well for the 1999 blockbuster “Supernatural.” Yet, both Santana and his wife, percussionist Cindy Blackman Santana have now posted online about the situation, confirming that heat and lack of water/food were the culprits.
“To one and all — thank you for your precious prayers,” Carlos Santana posted on Facebook. “Cindy and I are good, just taking it easy. Forgot to eat and drink water, so I (was) dehydrated and passed out. Blessings and miracles to you all.”
Cindy Blackman Santana also commented about how much the reaction from fans meant to the couple.
“Hi Everyone! Carlos & I thank you so much for your prayers, love, care & concern for him!” she posted. “Please know that he’s resting and doing very well! He was diagnosed with heat exhaustion & dehydration… it was 100 degrees on stage and 114 under the lights so that coupled with not enough water is what caused the issue. He’ll be as good as new soon! Thank you again and we love you! Cindy & Carlos.”
Santana was on the road with co-headliners Earth, Wind & Fire as part of the Miraculous Supernatural Tour.
The incredibly popular trek played two dates in the Bay Area — at Shoreline Amphitheatre at Mountain View and Concord Pavilion — in June.
Santana has meanwhile announced plans to postpone a performance originally slated for July 6 at The Pavilion at Star Lake in Burgettstown, Penn. Details on a new date will be announced by Live Nation, Vrionis said on Santana’s Facebook page.
The incident in Michigan follows a couple of other recent health related situations that impacted Santana’s touring plans.
In late 2021, Santana underwent an unplanned heart procedure that led to the cancellation/postponement of a number of his Las Vegas gigs. More Vegas gigs in early 2022 were put off after the guitar great contracted COVID.
“As most of you have probably heard, we have cancelled this weekends shows at The House of Blues in Las Vegas,” Santana posted on his website back in February. “Unfortunately, members of our band, including myself, tested positive for COVID.
“The good news is that we are all doing well and will be back performing very soon. I profoundly regret that this has happened, but our priority is to keep our fans safe as we all navigate thru this. Thank you all for your oneness and continued support.”
