The Athletics brought up three fresh arms Sunday in the wake of the previous day’s 11-4 loss to the Texas Rangers.
Right-handed relievers Domingo Tapia and Parker Markel and left-hander Sam Selman all got the call from Triple-A Las Vegas, while Zach Logue, Jake Lemoine and Adam Kolarek — all of whom faltered Saturday — were optioned to the Aviators.
Logue, a left-handed starter, had back-to-back poor starts and struggled with his location against Texas, giving up back-to-back home runs to Corey Seager and Adolis Garcia in going 2 1/3 innings, giving up seven hits and four earned runs. He was acquired in the deal that sent Matt Chapman to Toronto.
Lemoine served up a grand slam to Marcus Semien against Texas and had a 7.71 earned run average in nine appearances and Kolarek a 4.58 earned run average in 15 games. Together, the trio gave up 16 hits in six innings against the Rangers before new addition Austin Pruitt, called up from Las Vegas Saturday, finished things off with three scoreless innings.
A look at the three pitchers who joined the A’s Sunday and are expected to be available against the last game of the series against Texas:
Tapia: A waiver claim from the Kansas City Royals on April 30, the right-hander has a 4-1 record and 2.61 earned run average in stints with the Boston Red Sox (2020), Seattle (2021) and Royals (2021). With Omaha and Las Vegas this season in Triple-A, Tapia, 30, gave up 10 hits in 13 innings with a 3.38 earned run average with 10 strikeouts and six walks.
Markel: A 31-year-old right-hander, Markel had a 3-0 record and 1.89 ERA in Las Vegas. Opponents were hitting .191 against him. He has 20 games of major league experience with Seattle and Pittsburgh. When Markel takes the mound, he’d be the 12th rookie to pitch for the A’s this season. That has happened on four other occasions (2009, 2012, 2015 and 2016).
Selman: The former Giants reliever, 31, has a 1-0 record and 3.24 ERA in seven games. Opponents are hitting just .188 against him although walks have been an issue with nine in 13 1/3 innings. He also struck out 18 batters.
In other transactions, the A’s transferred right-handed starter Daulton Jefferies and outfielder Skye Bolt to the 60-day injured list, meaning neither will be back any time soon.
Jefferies went on the 15-day IL on May 20 after being diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome, while Bolt, who was already on the IL for an oblique strain, sustained a hamstring injury during his rehab.
