Archie Williams pitcher Cal Amborn and Redwood’s Charlie Welch were recipients of the awards in baseball while Redwood pitcher Sadie Leonard and her teammate Maddie Sofnas took the honors in softball as the MCAL released many of its all-league honors for spring sports.
Amborn pitched 69.2 innings this season and only half of his 22 runs allowed were unearned, giving him an earned-run average of 1.11. Amborn struck out 80 hitters against just nine walks.
Welch is hitting .439 this season and leads the Giants in hits (36), RBIs (20) and runs (20).
Leonard struck out 307 hitters this season against 20 walks over 141.1 innings. She posted a 0.74 ERA and allowed one home run the entire season — a solo shot in the North Coast Section Division II quarterfinals to Marin Catholic’s Lauren Osheroff last week.
Sofnas led the Giants with a .425 batting average to go along with 38 hits, 28 runs and 14 RBIs.
The first team for baseball features an infield of Tam’s Matteo Bellisimo, MC’s Carl Schmidt, Archie Williams’ Jonas Salk and San Marin’s Josh Martin. The outfield features Novato’s Derek Bartram, MC’s Layden Lee and Tam’s Jake Moore.
The pitchers are Tam’s Tyler Buxton and MC’s Kody Perry. Archie Williams catcher Noah Strobel rounded out the squad while Perry was also named as a DH/utility selection.
The softball first team was comprised of Tam’s Jordan Lebsock and Eden Clark, San Marin’s Micayla Fong and Lauren Fond, Redwood’s Kaela Sparler, Novato’s Gabrielle Winnett, San Rafael’s Thomara Drummer and MC’s Sammy Horn and Rose Malen.

Redwood swept the awards with Dennis Van Der Wal and Megan Minturn being named boys and girls MCAL players of the year, respectively.
Four more Redwood boys made the first team — William Baker, Jake Vasquez, Maxwell Malone and Robert Stephens. Novato placed three players on the squad in Owen Busby, Andrew McGrath and Cole Morris. MC (Colin Puckett and Mack Barry) and Tam (Simon Montencourt and Will Bruns) had two apiece. Terra Linda’s Tyler Ford was the other selection.
Four more Redwood players made the girls first team — Grace Minturn, Caroline McCulloch, Harper Glass and Jordan Vasquez. MC put three on the team with Kayla Conroy, Ellie Livermore and goalie Noelle Antongiovanni. Tam’s Kendra Weisman and Madison Smith, San Marin’s Siena Escandon-Capanna and Keira Engler, plus Branson’s Amanda Morris rounded out the first team.
Tam’s Marre Gattnar and Novato’s Kaley McIntyre were named the MCAL swimmers of the year. Both athletes won their individual events the the MCAL championships. Gattnar finished fifth at state in the 50 free in 20.39 seconds and tied for second in the 100 (48.30).
Archie Williams sprinter Max Henzl and Tam’s Drake Miller were named the MCAL’s boys track and field athletes of the year, respectively. On the girls side, Tam’s Brianna McInnis (track) and San Marin’s Jena Clark (field) were the selections.
Miller is headed to state this weekend in the high jump while McInnis is set to compete in the 1,600.
Archie Williams setter Owen Johnson took home the MCAL’s player of the year after helping lead the Peregrine Falcons to an unbeaten season in league play capped off by an MCAL title.
Archie Williams’ Will Gustafson was selected to the first team along with Tam’s duo of Lourenco Pereira and William Hatch. MC’s Mark Ogden, Redwood’s Auden Baker and West County’s Reid Olson rounded out the selections.
