Laci Mosley & Jaidyn Triplett Interview: iCarly Season 2
iCarly on Paramount+ has proven how successful a reboot can be when it sticks to the spirit of the original story. Although its protagonist Carly (played by Miranda Cosgrove) has transitioned to adulthood, the series continues to explore the tribulations of Internet stardom on a different scale.
While iCarly has reunited many of the original cast after 11 years, it has also introduced several new characters to the mix in order to flesh out Carly and her friends' adult lives. Two of the newer members of the squad are Laci Mosley (A Black Lady Sketch Show), who plays barista and aspiring fashion stylist Harper, and currently is roommates with Carly. Jaidyn Triplett, meanwhile, plays Freddie's stepdaughter Millicent.
We spoke to stars Jaidyn Triplett and Laci Mosley about how different the second season feels from the first, who their favorite guest stars have been, and how often they get recognized on the street.
Screen Rant: Congrats on another season! How does it feel just going into this season? You've found your footing. When you step on set this season, Jaidyn, what goes through your mind?
Jaidyn Triplett: I feel like it was a very smooth transition. It was like going back to my second home after a couple months, seeing my second family all over again. I think season two is more the relatable side. Season one, we kind of figured out our characters and our story and stuff. So now, going into season two, it's more relatable and growing and stuff like that.
Laci Mosley: First season, you're crafting these characters. How do they fit into this world that's already been established? Now that we know who Harper and Millicent are, you get to enjoy the ride, see a lot of weird stuff go down. And it's fun.
iCarly is also just like a meme factory. I feel like there's always something that comes up a show. Was there anything that caught on last season, or maybe that you think will catch on this season that you weren't expecting?
Laci Mosley: Absolutely. Last season, Miranda recreated the interesting meme, which if you know from Drake & Josh, that was Miranda playing the little sister on Drake & Josh. She's at the computer holding her drink and she's like, "Interesting." That's a huge meme in Black Twitter, has been for like a decade. We use it every single day.
When we shot the next one where Millicent gets to pop in, I was in the back. If you look at the new "interesting meme" with Miranda Cosgrove all grown up, you can see I'm behind her. That was really fun to sneak into a famous meme.
Jaidyn, same question, anything you're looking forward to people seeing this season or from last season that caught on?
Jaidyn Triplett: Oh, man, just a lot of craziness. It's just a bunch of adults trying to figure out the world, you know, with Carly with the whole love triangle that was a cliffhanger. It's very wild. A lot of things to look forward to whether it's the guest stars or even things that adults go through so you can look forward to relating to the characters. You can feel a lot of that.
You mentioned the guest stars. We know Josh Peck and some of our favorite drag queens are coming in. Who were you most excited to meet, Laci?
Laci Mosley: Okay, so there's two. One is behind the camera, Melissa Joan Hart, because I love Sabrina. Getting to work with Sabrina The Teenage Witch as a directress was really fun. And I would say, on camera - it's gonna sound so random, but - Kevin Miles who plays Jake, From State Farm! [Laughs] That was really fun.
Jaidyn Triplett: I would have to say Josh Peck, because I used to watch Drake & Josh a lot and getting to see him around the lot because he was filming How I Met Your Father… I was always so nervous. But having him on the show, and being able to hold a full conversation when he's not filming, that was really cool to meet him.
What is the number one thing that iCarly fans say to you when they approach you, when they see you on the street?
Jaidyn Triplett: I was at Olive Garden one time, and my waiter was so confident! [Laughs] He came up to me so confidently. He gave me my breadsticks, and then he was like, "So how does it feel to be on iCarly?" Whenever I get recognized, that's always the question.
Laci Mosley: I recently got a CAT scan, and as I was getting the CAT scan, the operator was like, "Oh, I knew I recognized you from iCarly!" He was like, "We're gonna take good care of you!" [Laughs] And I'm like, "Well I hope you were going to do that already!"
Jaidyn Triplett: One time I got recognized in security at an airport. I was in a hoodie, I had my mask on, and I was putting my luggage up. He was like, "You're from iCarly right?"
Carly's older brother Spencer has become a wealthy artist after accidentally creating a renowned sculpture. Following two divorces and a failed tech start-up, Freddie Benson has moved back to live with his mother, accompanied by his adopted 11-year-old stepdaughter Millicent.
