One Tree Hill: 10 Best Supporting Characters | Screen Rant
It seemed like a plethora of new characters were introduced during each season of the CW teen drama series One Tree Hill. While the core characters remained the same (Lucas, Nathan, Haley, Brooke, and Peyton), those who surrounded them changed constantly, serving as either their enemies, love interests, or new friends.
Supporting cast members can add a lot to a series even if they join the show late. Characters like Jake Jagielski and Skills Taylor remain fan-favorites despite having strictly supporting roles, and others like Alex and Lindsey are remembered even though their arcs were limited and never the main focus of the One Tree Hill plot. Every supporting character is important and integral to the show, but some are much more memorable and beloved than others.
Jana Kramer joined the One Tree Hill cast in season 7 as Alex Dupre, the actress hired to model for Clothes Over Bros who also posed a threat to Brooke and Julian's relationship.
While Alex's character was initially portrayed as a shallow girl trying to steal her boss's boyfriend, her storyline quickly turned into a harrowing plot about the importance of mental health and checking in on your loved ones. Alex's struggles added dimension to her character, and she became a more realistic, less cartoonish version of herself that strengthened the show's final seasons.
Bevin Mirskey had a large supporting role in the early seasons of One Tree Hill. She was the free-spirited, slightly aloof member of the Ravens cheerleading squad, and even had an adorable romance with Antwon "Skills" Taylor.
Bevin's character provided a lot of comic relief in the early years, never taking herself too seriously and having minor storylines that saved episodes from being too dark. Bevin's absence in the later seasons was largely felt, as the show was missing her bubbly personality. She did come back and make a final appearance in the series finale though, much to fans' delight.
Lindsey Strauss' presence on the show wasn't always well-received. She joined the cast in season 5 as Lucas's present-day love interest, the woman he had rebounded with following his breakup with Peyton. Their relationship eventually turned into an engagement and one of One Tree Hill's many failed weddings.
Despite not being meant for Lucas, Lindsey added a lot to the show and brought up a lot of flaws in Lucas's relationships with both Brooke and Peyton. She seemed mostly well-suited for him, the main issue in their relationship being that Lucas was always going to be in love with Peyton. Lindsey deserved better as a character, and it was a shame she lost friends in Nathan, Haley, and Jamie after their engagement ended.
The first few episodes of season 4 explored Peyton's mysterious half-brother, who was actually revealed to be her stalker, a man posing as her brother, Derek. Later, Peyton met the real Derek Sommers, with whom she shared a father.
Derek saved Peyton from the evil Derek on multiple occasions, making it a One Tree Hill storyline that was overdone. He also did his best to be a brotherly figure to her despite his reservations and resentment toward their father. Derek was a breath of fresh air for the series, not wanting to deal with the antics of Tree Hill and wanting to live a life separate from his hectic family roots. He later returned post-time jump, proving that his and Peyton's sibling bond was still strong.
Sam Walker was introduced in season 6 as a troubled teen who was eventually housed by Brooke. While initially skeptical of Brooke's intentions, she warmed up to her foster mom and became a part of the One Tree Hill family.
Sam's absence at the end of season 6 and the later seasons was felt, mostly because her bond was such an important part of Brooke's story and her budding romance with Julian. Sam played a large part in Brooke's maturing journey and her road to becoming a mother, and it was a shame to lose her after only one season.
Quentin Fields was first seen in season 5 as Haley's Nathan-esque student. He was jaded and angry and often made snide remarks to his teacher and coaches. Over time, he saw the value in their advice and became a better man, teammate, and mentor to young Jamie Scott.
Quentin served as the new generation of Tree Hill students and had a close relationship with Nathan, Skills, and Lucas. His unexpected death in season 6 was a huge plot twist, proving that no one was safe in Tree Hill. He also left a huge void for the rest of the season as the rest of the characters mourned him. However, he was able to still make appearances as a figment of Nathan's imagination, pushing him to make a proper basketball comeback.
Ellie Harp was a central part of season 3, where she finally admitted to Peyton that she was her biological mother and that she was in fact, adopted. This revelation finally allowed for Peyton to have a close bond with a family member, seeing as those her adopted mother died prior to season 1 and her father was hardly around.
Ellie's time on the show was important for Peyton's development, but also short-lived. She revealed to her daughter that she was dying from breast cancer, meaning that Peyton had to go through the motions of losing not just one mom, but two. Ellie's presence helped Peyton on her road to self-discovery, but also provided major heartache.
Jake Jagielski is a fan-favorite, specifically upon rewatch on the Drama Queens podcast. Jake was a supporting character in the first three seasons, acting as the single father of Jenny and a love interest for Peyton.
Jake was a kind soul faced with a lot of trouble, specifically when it came to custody over his baby daughter. He also posed a threat to the Peyton and Lucas relationship, with many fans pulling for his character to end up with P. Sawyer while simultaneously rooting for Brooke and Lucas to be endgame.
Lydia James first appeared in season 2 in flashbacks. She was shown giving her blessing to Nathan and Haley as they embarked on teenage marriage, and later she attended the party celebrating their union. She played a bigger role in season 7, reuniting with her daughters and informing them of her terminal diagnosis.
On a television show with so many bad parents, Lydia was a bright spot. She cared deeply for each of her children, and viewers got to see her relationships unfold with three of her daughters (Taylor, Quinn, and Haley). Her death gave way to a deeper, depressive storyline for Haley, someone who had spent so much of the series as a positive character.
Skills Taylor was always a background character on One Tree Hill but really came into his own in season 4. He later served a major purpose in the post-time jump seasons as Mouth's roommate, a Ravens basketball coach, and a close friend to every main character.
Skills added comic relief but also was the voice of reason during most of the complicated storylines. He always brought the core characters back to Earth and had multiple great romances with the likes of Bevin, Miss Lauren, and even Deb Scott.
