A new achievement for The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe has made it impossible to get Platinum for the game until 2032, without using cheats. The new achievement arrived with the release of The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe earlier this month and promises to cause a headache for achievement hunters looking to legitimately unlock all of the achievements.
The Stanley Parable is an experimental narrative-driven first-person game about a man named Stanley who leaves his desk one day to discover that all of his colleagues have vanished. It was released as a free mod for Half-Life 2 in 2011, before getting its own standalone release in 2013 to high critical and fan acclaim. The game was praised for its highly meta exploration of choice, freedom, storytelling, and reality and went on to win many awards. On April 27th, 2022, The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe was released, being described as an "expanded re-imagining" of the title with a meta-awareness of its own existence as a re-release, with neon signs pointing players to Ultra Deluxe's new content, which includes new endings and achievements.
One of the new achievements in question is the "Super Go Outside" achievement, which was announced on developer Crows Crows Crows' Twitter on the day of The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe's release. "Super Go Outside" takes the original The Stanley Parable achievement, "Go Outside" - which was only unlocked if players didn't play the game for five years - and decided to increase the length of time players can't play the game to ten years. The "Go Outside" and "Super Go Outside" achievements provided a further meta-statement by telling players not to continue playing the game at their computer, considering the whole point of The Stanley Parable's story was that its protagonist's whole adventure started the moment he got away from his computer.
Of course, players did find a way to cheat to unlock all of the achievements in The Stanley Parable, even finding a way to get the "Unachievable" achievement, which was designed to be un-triggerable in the game and show how easy it was to cheat Steam achievements. The original "Go Outside" achievement could be unlocked prior to 2018, with the most common method involving a simple change in the date and time on players' devices. The same method will likely be used to unlock "Super Go Outside" long before the ten-year mark. Of course, fellow gamers will know which players unlock these achievements illegitimately, as most achievements are time-stamped, so it will be pretty obvious that a player has cheated if they can see that an achievement for not playing a 2022 title in ten years has been unlocked before 2032.
With The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe bringing the title to consoles for the first time, achievements that were specific to Steam such as "Unachievable" have been lost along the way. Although achievements like "Super Go Outside" are bound to annoy those achievement hunters looking to unlock everything quickly but legitimately, it's all part of The Stanley Parable's charm.
