Report: Ex-Royal Engineer fined for making Nazi salute towards Spurs fans
Chronicle Live have revealed that Newcastle supporter Shay Asher has been fined for making a Nazi salute gesture towards Tottenham fans last October.
The incident occurred during Spurs’ 3-2 win over the Magpies at St James’ Park on October 17, with numerous complaints being made from members of the crowd after the game.
Tottenham has long been associated with the Jewish community and, as a result, some Spurs fans have been the victim of anti-Semitic abuse in the past (Independent).
Chronicle Live explain that Asher was identified after photos of him performing the offensive gesture circulated on social media, with the Metropolitan Police’s digital media team, who were investigating hate crimes, reporting the pictures to Northumbria Police.
The court was told that one fan reported Asher, a former Royal Engineer, to a steward but he denied making the gesture and claimed he “waving at a friend”.
The 24-year-old appeared at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, where he was fined £200 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £34 victim surcharge after pleading guilty to a racially-aggravated public order offence.

It is shocking that these sorts of incidents still go in football stadiums in 2022. This offence is no lesser than any other form of racial abuse and I believe the person in question should have received a lifetime ban in order to deter others from engaging in such appalling behaviour.
