The movie hasn't even arrived yet but Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness already has delivered some fantastic quotes. Set to hit theatres on May 6, 2022, the anticipation and excitement for the film have been snowballing since its official teaser dropped four months ago.
Building off the success of its recent Spider-Man: No Way Home, Marvel will further explore the multiverse and its implications in the upcoming film. While fans are eagerly awaiting the Doctor Strange sequel, the marketing team has given them ample official trailers, snippets, and featurettes to keep them satisfied and excited for the release.
Spider-Man: No Way Home saw Stephen Strange bending the rules of reality in an attempt to "help" Peter Parker. Unfortunately, what he assumed to be a quick spell turned into Strange accidentally opening the multiverse. While this resulted in perhaps the best Spider-Man movie, it seems like a recipe for disaster for the characters within the MCU.
Rather than acknowledging his part in unleashing the multiverse, Strange instead pinned the blame on Peter and his interruptions. Although it is yet unclear whether Mordo is referring to these events or something new, it'll be interesting to see Strange face real repercussions for his actions, and how they will compare to those potentially faced by Wanda.
One trademark of the MCU is the dire circumstances under which its heroes must come to the rescue every time. Whether it be foiling Dormammu, fighting Ego, or reversing Thanos' snap, many of the final fight scenes involve high stakes for Marvel's saviors. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness appears to be no different.
This time the fate of the multiverse relies on the heroes of the film, with other quotes reminding them how "the multiverse is dangerous" and "life or death." While the ensuing challenge appears to be another difficult one, it'll be intriguing to see whether the multiversal fight(s) will be more intense than the others seen so far.
The first official trailer showed Strange stating he dreams the same dream every night, only to awake and have the nightmare begin. A more recent snippet titled "Dream" showed Strange beginning this statement, only for the audio to transition into Wanda saying she has the same nightmare every morning instead.
It's true that Wanda and Strange share many similarities, and this overlap hints at the two heroes both going through equal but distinct struggles in the new film. While Wanda's nightmare appears to stem from grief and Strange's from impending doom, this line sets them both up to reconcile their dreams with their realities, as well as putting their actions in comparison to one another.
Marvel has frequently explored the line between hero and villain, making it known that the distinction is not as clear and easy as it seems. With characters like Killmonger and Helmut Zemo, it has been made apparent that not all villains are inherently evil, just as heroes are not without flaws. This quote again reminds fans of this fact.
It is significant especially for this film as characters like Strange and Wanda require redemption for their prior actions. It also posits a familiar moral dilemma onto the heroes: will they choose to continue on their destructive paths or ultimately sacrifice themselves and/or their happiness for the greater good?
The official trailer shows Stephen being brought before a council, supposedly for trial for his "desecration of reality." Among those on the committee, a familiar voice suggests telling Strange about some hidden truth. Fans have speculated that this council is really Marvel's Illuminati, which will be incorporated into the film along with its notable members.
This line, or rather, the voice that states it, is significant because it seems to belong to Patrick Stewart, who played Charles Xavier in the original X-Men films. This would entail the introduction of the mutants and the X-Men universe into the MCU, with the Illuminati connection also hinting at a much greater expansion of the MCU.
Marvel has never been one to shy away from giving its heroes formidable opponents and overpoweringly difficult circumstances. Whether it be Vision's self-sacrifice or Iron Man's death, the MCU has shown fans that even the strongest of superheroes can have their plans derailed and be defeated in some way.

2016's Captain America: Civil War saw Wanda Maximoff going against the Sokovia Accords and becoming a fugitive, but Infinity War and Endgame undoubtedly re-established her as a worldwide hero as she fought against Thanos. Unfortunately, the events of WandaVision once again left Wanda's fate as an Avenger uncertain.
While Wanda is shown reminding Strange that there are other Avengers out there to help him tackle the multiverse, he reminds her that she could use this opportunity to rebuild her image. This line provides hope and some possible redemption for Wanda, something she apparently needs after being blacklisted for her actions in Westview.
With his control over the Time Stone, Stephen has the ability to foresee the probabilities of winning against sinister forces, as demonstrated in Infinity War. It seems like, just as there was allegedly only one way to stop Thanos, there will again be only one way for him to successfully sort out the mayhem of the multiverse.
Along with a call-back to the events of the last two Avengers films, this line is a reminder of how high the stakes are on this path. It also reminds viewers of the trust others can put in Strange and his abilities. While not everything may be a life or death situation, it seems many of the difficult choices in this film will be, with there being only one way to come out of this.
Wanda can be seen playfully saying this to Strange, with the next scene cutting to him saying "Oh, come on!" While the two clips are from different parts of the film, placing them side by side is a strategic way for Marvel to showcase Strange's overconfidence and the importance Wanda places on the multiverse that somewhere contains her sons.
As already established, the multiverse is a dangerous and fairly unexplored concept so tampering with it is not something to be taken lightly, especially since it has been meddled with already. While viewers hope to have Strange handle it with care, this line reminds them of all that is on the line and how swiftly things could dive into chaos.
It is widely speculated whether or not Wanda will be the villain of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. While some snippets show her as a potential ally, other scenes portray her as an enemy. Either way, it has been made clear that the world has not forgiven Wanda for the mistakes she made in Westview.
This quote has become a popular one, as it highlights the hypocrisy in the judgments passed onto Wanda. While Strange too has committed mistakes, he is applauded but Wanda is again ostracized. This line also implies establishing Wanda as an antagonist and pitting the two heroes against one another. The underlying meaning behind this quote will be uncertain until the film hits theatres next week.
