But last month the 44-year-old, who has won a record seven Super Bowls, performed a U-turn and will continue playing for Tampa Bay Buccaneers as he wrestles with the concept of what to do next.
Unexpectedly, fellow seven-time champion Hamilton now finds himself at a very similar career crossroads.
