RTS Game Purple War Trailer May Show The Best Warcraft Clone Yet

Upcoming RTS game Purple War has released a new trailer that shows that it may be the best Warcraft clone yet. It’s been over a decade since Warcraft creator Blizzard Entertainment released a brand-new RTS game. While the studio did release Warcraft 3: Reforged in 2020, including many of the classic game’s elements, including its gameplay and the same cheats from Warcraft 3, the remaster also changed or removed components that led it to receive overwhelmingly negative reviews from its players.

While the real-time strategy genre isn’t as popular as it once was, there are still many developers that are still working on and releasing new RTS titles. While some are simply the latest installment or iteration in long-running RTS franchises, some are brand-new IPs that either try to rekindle the feel of classic RTS titles or put a unique spin on the genre in an attempt to make it more attractive to new players in the age of battle royales, MOBAs, and other live-service titles. Some of 2021’s Best RTS games were a clear indication of this trend, including the likes of Age Of Empires 4, Beyond All Reason, and more.

A new trailer on the Purple War YouTube channel reveals its visuals and gameplay, which look and feel incredibly similar to Warcraft. Players will be able to choose between one of three races, Orcs, Humans, and Elves, and participate in matches with up to eight players. The designs of the game’s different buildings and troops are very reminiscent of ones found in Warcraft 3 while one of the game’s resources looks like it was influenced by Starcraft’s minerals. According to developer Warlogics, Purple War will have a playtest from April 25 to May 8, 2022. Unlike the early access of Shiro Games’ Dune: Spice Wars, which won’t include multiplayer or a campaign, Purple War's playtest will focuses on online multiplayer.

Just like in the classic RTS titles it takes its inspiration from, Purple War players will collect and manage resources to build bases and train troops as well as utilize tactics such as scouting, sneak attacks, resource disruption, and more, to achieve victory against their opponents. Warlogics has said that Purple War’s gameplay is fast-paced but easy to learn, which will allow players to focus on strategy and tactics.

It’ll be interesting to see how well Warlogics’ take on a classic RTS will be received. While other upcoming RTS titles are attempting to present something new or unique, such as the aforementioned Dune: Spice Wars’ hybrid 4X and RTS gameplay, Purple War is sticking to classic mechanics. Although long-time fans of the genre may be more interested to try it out, it’ll be more important for the studio to be able to attract brand-new players.
