The Daily Mirror have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur are now facing competition from Everton for Sam Johnstone’s signature.
Johnstone’s current deal at West Brom runs out this summer and Steve Bruce has confirmed the goalkeeper will not be extending his stay at the Hawthorns (BBC Sport).
Spurs allegedly want to sign the England international as Hugo Lloris’ backup, with reports indicating that the North London club are confident of winning the race for the goalkeeper (The Sun).
Football Insider reported this week that Johnstone has told his friends that he is keen on a switch to Tottenham and believes he could eventually succeed Lloris as the club’s number one.
The Mirror have now also claimed that Antonio Conte’s men believe they are in pole position to snap up the 29-year-old.
However, they add that Everton are also watching developments closely and could swoop for Johnstone as they fear losing Jordan Pickford, who has just two years left to run on his contract at Goodison Park.

If Everton lose Pickford, they might have the upper hand over Spurs in the race for Johnstone as the 29-year-old would probably prefer being number 1 with the Toffees rather than being Lloris’ understudy.
That is unless Tottenham can convince him that they see him as Lloris’ long-term successor 12 months down the line.
