I Want To Say – Leeds United Boss Jesse Marsch Tackles Furore Around Over-trained Comments

 

Marsch made the headlines earlier this month when he claimed that his new charges were over-trained when he inherited them from his predecessor Bielsa at Elland Road.

 

Bielsa, who has become a cult hero at the club, is much loved by the Leeds faithful and many felt Marsch was being disrespectful to the Argentine with his remarks about the Leeds players’ physical state, which has resulted in him being on the receiving end of some criticism.

 

 

However, Marsch has insisted that his comments were not intended to attack Bielsa but admitted he can see how they could be interpreted that way.

 

The American stressed that he respects Bielsa to a high degree and pointed to how positively he spoke of the Argentine when he parted ways with the club.

 

 

“I want to say that this was not intentional to attack Marcelo in any way, it was a little bit careless and I can see how it’s interpreted”, Marsch told a press conference while discussing his claim that the Leeds players were over-trained.

 

“It’s more about the state of the player pool, what I had observed.

 

 

“You’d be hard pressed to find an incoming coach who has spoken more positively about an outgoing coach – it’s because I have major respect for him.

 

“I want to make sure that respect for Marcelo is understood to be at a high level.”

 

Leeds are currently in the midst of an extended break and will return to the pitch on Monday when they take on Crystal Palace in the Premier League at Selhurst Park.
