Set photos from Christopher Nolan's World War II biopic Oppenheimer show Matt Damon, Cillian Murphy, and Dane DeHaan in military uniform.
Photos from the set of Oppenheimer show off stars Matt Damon, Dane DeHaan, and Cillian Murphy in costume. Oppenheimer is the latest film from filmmaker Christopher Nolan, who is best known for puzzle box films like Memento, Inception, Interstellar, and 2020's Tenet. However, he has made a recent effort toward creating thrilling historical epics, beginning with his 2017 World War II drama Dunkirk, which was nominated for eight Oscars including Best Picture, winning three of them. Oppenheimer is set around the same time period, adapting Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin's 2005 J. Robert Oppenheimer biography American Prometheus, which follows Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer during the development of the atomic bomb in the Manhattan Project.
Nolan has assembled a massive ensemble cast to play the ensemble figures that surrounded Oppenheimer during this time. This includes Matt Damon as Manhattan Project director Leslie Groves and Emily Blunt as Oppenheimer's wife Kitty, who ran the Los Alamos laboratory. Just a small sample of the rest of the cast includes MCU veterans Robert Downey Jr. and Florence Pugh as Lewis Strauss and Jean Tatlock, You's Dylan Arnold as Frank Oppenheimer, and Drake & Josh's Josh Peck as Kenneth Bainbridge, alongside No Time to Die's Rami Malek, Scream 2022's Jack Quaid, Death on the Nile's Kenneth Branagh, The Suicide Squad's David Dastmalchian, Old's Alex Wolff, and Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets' Dane DeHaan.
The Daily Mail has just shared a set of three photos taken from the set of Oppenheimer, showing Damon, DeHaan, and Murphy in their costumes for the film. The costumes are all military uniforms, but so far Nolan seems to have avoided the sameness of the cast of Dunkirk by casting recognizable actors who mostly have different ranks and thus slightly different colors and insignias. Damon, for instance, is depicted in a brown and tan suit that, along with his mustache, recalls his role in the 2009 film The Informant! while DeHaan's uniform is green and Murphy is decked out in a full, dark suit straight out of Inception. These costumes don't necessarily lend insight into the nature of the film, given their historical accuracy to the characters being played. However, they do give a sense of the way Nolan is utilizing the fashions of the time to play into his typical dapper sensibility. They also just prove that Oppenheimer is going ahead on schedule rather than merely resting on its laurels and announcing new cast members every two or three days, as it seemed to be for quite some time.
Oppenheimer is eyeing a release date for next summer, so there certainly is no time to lose. It is currently unknown if this film will be a typical Nolan spectacle or a more pared-down psychological and societal portrait. Regardless, with just over a year until the release, Nolan will need all the time he can get to make sure the film is polished and completed on time.
