Batwoman, Legends of Tomorrow, and additional CW shows are reportedly at risk of not being renewed next season. 2022 has been a strange year for long-time viewers of The CW, especially when it comes to the Arrowverse franchise. Usually, around this time of year, The CW has already renewed most of its shows for the following season. This typically happens in late January or early February, as The CW is known for wanting to give the showrunners and writers time to plan ahead for next season. 2022, however, has been a different story due to WarnerMedia and Paramount looking to sell The CW.
While nothing has emerged about the sale since the January report, it has evidently delayed The CW's decisions on several shows. It wasn't until March when the network finally began to hand out its first batch of renewals. However, only two Arrowverse shows were renewed at that time, as The Flash season 9 and Superman & Lois season 3 got the green light. Since Stargirl season 3 has yet to premiere, a decision on the teen-hero drama will come at a later date. In the meantime, the remaining DC TV shows that are waiting to learn their fate are Batwoman, Legends of Tomorrow, as well as newcomer Naomi, with the former two having already wrapped their latest seasons.
However, it appears things may be looking grimmer than expected for some of The CW fan-favorites. A new report from Deadline provided some fresh updates in regards to the remaining unconfirmed cancelations and renewals. When it comes to the DC TV properties, Batwoman, Legends of Tomorrow, and Naomi will be in consideration, alongside The CW's new potential superhero series Gotham Knights, which is currently shooting its pilot. The concerning factor, however, is that only half of the DC projects are expected to make the cut for the 2022-2023 TV season. Other CW properties that are also at vulnerable states are Dynasty, which is in season 5, and The 4400 reboot. Charmed and Legacies reportedly have better odds, with the latter potentially enjoying better prospects due to its roots in The Vampire Diaries franchise.
What may also play a heavy factor in The CW's show renewal decisions is also the completion of this month's Warner Bros. Discovery merger. With that in mind, plus the potential sale, fans may have to wait until May 19, which is when The CW has its upfronts scheduled. There's also the reported shake-up at DC Entertainment for the future of DC movies and TV shows, which could have some effect on Batwoman, Legends of Tomorrow, and Naomi. Given how much The CW has invested into Gotham Knights, it is likely considered to be a lock for a series pick-up, which leaves only one DC TV spot left for the bubble shows, should this report come to fruition.
Batwoman season 3 wrapped up most of its plots, but ended with a tease of a potential season 4 Big Bad. Legends of Tomorrow season 7 finished on a major cliffhanger that may never be resolved if season 8 doesn't happen. If Legends of Tomorrow season 8 were to be green-lit, it would follow the heroes, including Donald Faison's Booster Gold, dealing with being arrested by the Time Police. Naomi season 1 is set to end on May 10, but its cliffhanger remains to be seen. While understandably frustrated, fans of Batwoman, Legends of Tomorrow, and the other CW bubble dramas will sadly have to wait just a little longer to find out what will make the 2022-2023 schedule.
