Georgia set to host group of big-time transfers over Easter weekend

By ADAM ZAGORIA

New Georgia coach Mike White is looking to hit the NCAA Transfer Portal hard after taking over a program that finished 6-26 under former coach Tom Crean.

The Bulldogs will host Bradley transfer Terry Roberts, Syracuse transfer Frank Anselem and Oklahoma State transfer Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe.

“I’m actually on my way to visit Georgia now,” said the 6-foot-4 Roberts, a Bradley transfer originally from North Amityville, N.Y. who averaged 14.5 points, 4.9 rebounds and 4.1 assists last season while shooting 45 percent from the field and 35 percent from deep.

He recently dropped a Top 10 that also included Maryland, Oregon, Texas, Memphis and others.

The 6-7 Alexander Moncrieffe averaged 4.2 points and 3.9 rebounds as a sophomore at Oklahoma State.

“Georgia, they’re cool,” he said by phone. “Obviously, one of the old assistants I played for at Oklahoma State [Erik Pastrana] is coaching there, so they’re rebuilding, they’re starting new and I’m just interesting in hearing what they have to say and what they think of for me and my career and getting me to the next level and getting better. That’s what I’m focused on, is getting better.”

Moncrieffe said he may also visit Georgetown, Arizona State and Oregon.

“Georgetown, it’s probably going to be my second time visiting them,” he said. “Their message is the same, their expectations for me and they really want to get me better. Obviously, coach Pat [Ewing] is one of the best players to ever do it so I’m just really intrigued to see what he can do for me and how I can help them, and just everything that we can do.”

Arizona State is having “small talks” with him. “I haven’t really spoken to Bob Hurley yet or anything,” he said.

He added he spoke to Oregon “a little bit.”

The 6-10 Anselem is a sophomore and Georgia native who leaves Syracuse after averaging 14.2 minutes, 2.6 points and 3.8 rebounds. He was surpassed in the rotation by big man Jesse Edwards.

He initially committed to Syracuse in June 2020 over Georgia, New Mexico and San Diego State.

“Frank’s an agile, athletic 6-9 rim-runner, shot-blocker,” then-Prolific Prep coach Joey Fuca said when he committed to Syracuse. “He plays extremely hard. He just started playing basketball so he’s got a huge upside ahead of him. He’s very coachable, is a great kid and a great student.

“He did a great job for us in ball-screen coverage. He can really get out for a guy his size, he can hard-hedge, he can double. He’s very, very mobile for a big guy. “And then offensively, he runs the floor at a high level. The coaches are not going to have an issue with him playing hard.”
