Congratulations to both Jordan Johnson and Vance Johnson on earning their place in this week’s All-Star 5! The Rocks excelled this weekend after beating both Surrey Scorchers and Cheshire Phoenix with ease. We look forward to this Sunday as the London Lions come to Glasgow, in their last meeting the Rocks overwhelmed the Lions in the 4th quarter to snatch the win at the Copper Box, can they win again?
The latest BBL All-Star 5 is led by London Lions’ seven-foot star Kylor Kelley after an extraordinary near-triple-double, while the in-form Glen Luss Glasgow Rocks have a pair of representatives for the second week in a row, and Tyrik Armstrong joins Geno Crandall at the top of the appearances charts.
Kylor Kelley – London Lions
London Lions handily beat Newcastle Eagles in the final game of March last Wednesday night at the Copper Box Arena, with Kylor Kelly in absolutely dominant form as he makes his third All-Star 5 appearance of the season. Amazingly, he was just one blocked shot away from a rare triple-double as he finished with 16 points, a massive 17 rebounds, and nine blocks, also adding four assists and two steals. He made a key score when Eagles got the deficit down to single-figures in the third quarter, and then put the game to bed with eight points, four rebounds and two blocks in the fourth period.
Jordan Johnson – Glen Luss Glasgow Rocks
Rocks made it five straight wins with a weekend double-header, going through a century for a fourth straight game – having scored 99 in the other – led by the form of point guard Jordan Johnson as he gains weekly honours for a seventh time, third among all players, and for a second week in a row. In Friday’s victory over Surrey Scorchers at the Emirates Arena he posted a double-double of 28 points and 11 assists and set the tone from the outset with 13 first quarter points as Glasgow took an early double-digit lead and never looked back.
Vance Johnson – Glen Luss Glasgow Rocks
A teammate making his first All-Star 5 appearance is 6’9″ Chicago native Vance Johnson as he moved into the starting line-up in the face of injury problems for Glasgow’s home game against Cheshire Phoenix on Sunday. That didn’t hold back either the team or Johnson himself as the sixth-placed Rocks closed the gap on the Phoenix, immediately above them, with a 103-77 win as Johnson put up a first BBL career double-double of 22 points, on 10-15 (66%) shooting, with 13 rebounds, including the basket that gave them a double-figure lead in a dominant second stanza.
Rodney Glasgow Jr. – B. Braun Sheffield Sharks
Sheffield continue their pursuit of second place in the BBL Championship table and started the weekend with a home win over Plymouth City Patriots at Ponds Forge on Friday, led by point guard Rodney Glasgow Jr. as he makes his fourth All-Star 5 showing of the campaign. He shot 7-10 (70%) from the floor on his way to 17 points, grabbing seven rebounds and handing out five assists, with two steals as Sheffield continued their fine defensive performances. Sharks raced into an early double-digit lead as Glasgow Jr. had six points, three assists and two steals in the first quarter, and they were rarely threatened thereafter.
Tyrik Armstrong – Manchester Giants
Manchester’s point guard Tyrik Armstrong joins Geno Crandall at the top of the appearances chart, with this being his eighth overall and his third in the last four weeks, as Giants continued their good form in the race for second place with a fifth win in six games, beating Bristol Flyers on the road on Saturday. The Houston native scored 21 points on 8-13 (61%) shooting, with eight assists, five rebounds and two steals, with four assists in the first quarter as he got his team ticking over and Giants established an early lead, before five points in the third including the ‘and-one’ play that gave them a double-digit advantage and a key score when the hosts got back to within four down the stretch.
Off the bench: Justin Gordon (Newcastle Eagles), Dan Clark (Manchester Giants), Geno Crandall (Leicester Riders), Isaiah Reese (London Lions), Corey Johnson (Newcastle Eagles), Teddy Okereafor (Cheshire Phoenix), Marcus Evans (Bristol Flyers).
