Reportedly, a fifth MonsterVerse movie is in development. If it really is Son of Kong, it would drastically change Kong's Godzilla vs. Kong ending.
A Son of Kong movie would drastically change Kong’s Godzilla vs. Kong ending. According to recent rumors, the MonsterVerse is developing a Son of Kong story for the big screen. A sequel to the 1933 King Kong classic, the original version went back to Skull Island to tell the story of Kong’s 12-foot-tall albino son.
Reportedly, Legendary Pictures is working on a fifth MonsterVerse movie that will serve as a sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong. As of yet, it’s not altogether clear if the rumored film is a direct continuation that will reunite the two Titans, or a solo adventure about Godzilla or Kong. A report from Production Weekly claims that the sequel is currently titled Son of Kong and may or may not be helmed by Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard. If this is true, the offspring of Hollow Earth’s new king will be the MonsterVerse’s next protagonist. But for that to happen, Kong will have to find a mate somewhere in the hidden Hollow Earth world.
What needs to transpire for Son of Kong to work in the MonsterVerse would involve some big changes to the ending of Godzilla vs. Kong. When the film ended, there was an impression that Kong and the humans had reached the conclusion that he really was the last of his kind. He came to the Hollow Earth in search of more, but instead found the skeletons of his ancestors and an abandoned temple. Kong seemingly accepted this outcome and assumed his position as the new alpha of the Hollow Earth. But if Son of Kong happens, that means a much happier ending occurred for the character. Rather than come to terms with being alone, Kong must have found at least one more member of his species.
For Kong, this is what the trip to the Hollow Earth was really about. Kong’s parents had been killed long ago by the Skullcrawlers, so getting down there was a chance to find not only a new home, but a new family to call his own. Godzilla vs Kong’s ending indicated that Kong was able to achieve one of these goals, but not the other. He was given false hope by the humans, who just used him to accomplish APEX’s mission. Kong did end up with a new place to live but remained the sole surviving member of his species. This added a tragic element to Kong’s arc, which Son of Kong would take away.
If the MonsterVerse does move in this direction, the fifth movie could start out with the Titan in a very different position from where he was when Godzilla vs. Kong left off. During the time skip between the two films, he could have become the leader of a new group of Kongs surviving somewhere in the Hollow Earth world. Kong losing his loner status could be what opens the door for a new MonsterVerse ape to take the spotlight in Son of Kong.
