Rob Zombie shares a new image from behind-the-scenes on The Munsters offering a new look at Sheri Moon Zombie's family matriarch Lily. Zombie is set to star in the upcoming film reboot of the beloved sitcom alongside Jeff Daniel Phillips as family patriarch Herman, Daniel Roebuck as Grandpa, Richard Brake as Transylvanian doctor Henry Augustus Wolfgang, Jorge Garcia as Herman's best friend Floop, Elvira's Cassandra Peterson, Sylvester McCoy and Catherine Schell. The Munsters revolves around the titular family of supernatural beings as they struggle to adapt to normal life in the fictional Mockingbird Heights suburbs.
Development on a Munsters reboot has languished in hell for nearly a decade now, with NBC originally putting together a one-hour drama from Hannibal's Bryan Fuller entitled Mockingbird Lane that was canceled after creative differences with its pilot. Saturday Night Live's Seth Meyers tried to his hand at another TV reboot, which ultimately never got off the ground, while Keenen Ivory, Shawn and Marlon Wayans attempted to write and produce a film adaptation in the early '00s that similarly died in development. Zombie's The Munsters movie was announced in early 2021 when the horror filmmaker signed on to write and direct and as production continues on the project, the director has shared an exciting behind-the-scenes tease.
Zombie recently took to Instagram to celebrate the birthday of composer Zeuss, with whom the filmmaker previously worked with for 3 From Hell and 31. The image of Zeuss reveals him to be working on The Munsters, with a monitor in the background offering a new look at Sheri Moon Zombie's Lily Munster in the upcoming film. In the early stages of its production, many found themselves wondering if Zombie's The Munsters would retain the black-and-white styling of its sitcom source or if it would change to color for a modern audience. However, recent set photos and character images shared by the director have seemingly confirmed that the film will be in color, with the new look at Sheri Moon Zombie's Lily further indicating a colorful approach to the material. That being said, given the image of the character comes from Zeuss' musical suite, it's also possible for a black-and-white filter to be applied to the movie prior to its release.
Regardless of the color scheme, the new BTS image from The Munsters should help build anticipation in fans of both the sitcom and Zombie. Though musical composing can come in the midst of production, Zombie's image of Zeuss putting the score together for the movie may point towards filming nearing its end and editing possibly already being underway for the reboot, especially with the recent PG rating, potentially setting it up for a Halloween 2022 release in theaters and on Peacock. In the meantime, audiences can revisit the original Munsters sitcom streaming now on Peacock.
