In a recent interview, voice of Lisa Simpson Yeardley Smith promised to ask about a possible remaster or sequel to the beloved game The Simpsons: Hit & Run. The Simpsons have had many games made about them over the years, but the open-world 2003 game Hit & Run has arguably been the most popular. Over the years, many fans have pointed out how deserving Hit & Run is of a remaster, as it was originally released for older consoles and is now largely unplayable for most gamers.
The Simpsons: Hit & Run was originally released for PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, and PC in 2003. Often compared to the Grand Theft Auto series, the open-world driving game had players driving through a myriad of Springfield locations as they attempted to find the cause behind strange events plaguing the town. Much like GTA, the game had a wanted system that would rise as players committed illegal deeds. It featured voice acting from all main cast members of the cartoon, the ability to play as several different characters, and a huge selection of cars from the series that players could drive. Throughout the years, many fans have requested a new way to play the iconic game, with a study even determining that Hit & Run is the most requested game remaster.
During a recent interview with YouTuber The Movie Dweeb, voice actress Yeardley Smith agreed to ask The Simpsons team about a possible sequel or remaster of The Simpsons: Hit & Run. The host, Daniel, implored Smith to "ask Matt and the rest of the team," referring to series creator Matt Groening, "to make a remaster or sequel," joking that he would pay her to do it. She responded, "I will ask for free because you're fabulous." Continuing, Smith said, "It would be my pleasure. I will ask about that, why not?" and followed it up with a pinkie promise with the host to go through on her word. Smith added, "I will even send you a response, so you can do a little mini-update" regarding the project. The host joked that he "feels as if he's going to win a Nobel Peace Prize for getting Hit & Run 2 on shelves." The video can be viewed below:
While some games are easily emulated, that has not been the case with The Simpsons: Hit & Run. Over the years, some fans desperate to play Hit & Run again have compiled their own versions of the game, but never with much success, as the fan-made versions of Hit & Run quickly fall victim to copyright claims. However, it's not just fans that have expressed wishes for a new version of the game - the producer and senior designer for the original game have also expressed their desire for a Hit & Run 2. With both fans and original creators in favor of the game, the added insider power of Yeardley Smith inquiring about the game may be enough to set something in motion.
Of the many Simpsons games released over the years, none has had the lasting impact of Hit & Run. Its brilliant story and hilarious dialogue paired with a detailed world and fun gameplay made it a dream come true for fans of the show. Although not everyone believes Hit & Run needs a remake, it is certainly the most requested game for a huge amount of Simpsons fans. While it's unknown what response the team behind The Simpsons will give, this interview has undoubtedly given many players a sense of hope for the future of Hit & Run 2 or a remaster.
