From the stealth-based approach in Hitman 3 to the combat-heavy mechanics in Batman: Arkham Knight, Assassin's Creed Odyssey has many similar games.
The Assassin’s Creed series has seen many highs and lows, with Assassin’s Creed Odyssey considered to be one of its brightest points. The game features Kassandra in Ancient Greece, where gameplay elements include platforming, stealth, melee and ranged combat, to go with the exploration of an open world.
Odyssey has an addictive feel to it that fans want to find in other games. Fortunately, there are quite a few features that offer the same gameplay and narrative experience as Odyssey. These range in genre from fantasy, adventure, and crime, but offer entertainment value along the same lines. There are also aspects unique to these games that Odyssey fans will be happy to indulge in.
While the original God of War video games were based on Greek mythology, the 2018 entry shifted focus to a Nordic setting. Much like Odyssey, this game has a heavy emphasis on the theme of family, with Kratos traveling with his son, Atreus, across the Nordic realms.
The combat aspect is similar to Odyssey when it comes to the hard-hitting variety, as Kratos packs a punch when taking on multiple enemies. Atreus’ archery comes in handy as a valuable assist to Kratos, with Odyssey fans sure to find their dynamic interesting like Kassandra’s was with the likes of Alexios.
The predecessor to Odyssey is the most similar game in the series, with Assassin’s Creed origins bringing great characters, combat, and exploration, among other features. Those who played Odyssey before Origins will find themselves comfortably at home here, as the Medjay Beyak’s controls are identical to Kassandra’s.
Moreover, the story has Layla Hassan as the present-day protagonist, meaning Odyssey players will have the same hero in Origins as well. Where Odyssey has the vistas of the Greek world, Origins provides the deserts of Ancient Egypt, complete with landmarks from olden times.
Considered among the greatest Batman games ever made, Odyssey fans will find this to be along the same lines but an exceptionally high-octane experience. Batman: Arkham Knight is also an open world feature that has players explore the entirety of Gotham City in search of the Scarecrow while avoiding the titular Arkham Knight.
In terms of gameplay, Arkham Knight has stealth elements like Odyssey where players have to map out large areas by planning attacks to capture targets. Combat doesn’t make fans hold back any punches, as Batman’s brutal methods are there for the taking.
Set in contemporary Hong Kong, Sleeping Dogs is an open world game about police officer Wei Shen working undercover with the Triads. Odyssey fans won’t find any stealth aspects here but they will connect to Sleeping Dogs’ exploration opportunities that reveal something new at every turn.
There is a bevy of side missions that can be completed, which is much like Odyssey’s wide array of optional content. Sleeping Dogs has a darker atmosphere than most games, as players have to become accustomed to the gangster mentality around the protagonist.
Many feel that Miles Morales’ Spider-Man can do more than Peter Parker’s, which was proven in his titular game. Odyssey has some larger-than-life aspects that are magnified further in Spider-Man: Miles Morales, as it makes full use of the superhero powers of the protagonist.
As in Odyssey, there’s a big world to venture into where players can look to help those in need. A bigger similarity is the combat system that empowers fans to take on multiple enemies through the use of creative weaponry. Spider-Man: Miles Morales carries a heartwarming theme of inclusion as the hero looks to fit in and also rehabilitate the villain.
Apart from the presence of guns in Red Dead Redemption 2, there’s little to separate it from Odyssey. Here, too, players will primarily be on horseback in a vast frontier where danger constantly lurks. The game’s combat is simplistic like Odyssey’s, with enemies easy to defeat through the use of a number of guns.
The story is about outlaws Arthur Morgan and John Marston and looks into the themes of betrayal, as well as camaraderie. Odyssey fans will take to the plot because it plays close to Kassandra’s own links to her friends and family, although Red Dead Redemption 2 does have a grittier backdrop to engage in.
It can technically claim to be an open world game since levels are expansive enough to access, but Hitman 3 doesn’t have the free-roaming as Odyssey. What the latter game’s fans will love here, however, is the extra focus on stealth assassinations as Agent 47 has many options to choose from.
Hitman 3 places players in several environments that vary in complexity, where the focus is on avoiding detection to reach the target to assassinate them. Odyssey didn’t have as many stealth-based missions as many would have liked, so Hitman 3 will be a game that will fulfill this aspect very well.
Set in The Lord of the Rings universe, this game follows the quest to forge a new Ring of Power to use against Sauron. In many ways, Middle-earth: Shadow of War is the same as Odyssey because they’re both set in the past and have similar fighting mechanics.
Shadow of War has an open world where players can make use of supporting characters as part of their quests. Gameplay requires a long-term strategy to mount an attack against enemies in a blend of stealth and action, although the story can get a little complicated for those unfamiliar with this universe.
Lara Croft’s adventures in Shadow of the Tomb Raider take her to the city of Paititi which has a comparable outlook to many environments in Odyssey. What fans of the latter will like best is the platforming mechanics around which the game is based, as players need to navigate around the lush city.
In an interesting turn for the series, Lara can take down enemies through the use of stealth by camouflaging herself in the environment. Straight-up combat is also an option, but the game is designed in such a way that players will be inclined to give stealth and platforming greater importance.
Set in the post-apocalyptic United States of the far future, Horizon Forbidden West continues the story of Aloy as she searches for a way to stop an alien threat. Other than a smaller focus on melee combat, the game is very similar to Odyssey, as Aloy and Kassandra’s mechanics favor platforming and multiple enemy takedowns.
Horizon Forbidden West has a complex narrative where a new revelation arrives at every turn to change the context of the story, with Aloy learning the truth about why the apocalypse occurred. Fans will take more to the plot than gameplay, but there’s enough open world exploration here to keep players busy for a long time.
