I’m a super-organized mum but break all the fridge rules – why snacks should be the focus

STOCKING the fridge after a grocery haul feels great – until you try to put away a bag of baby carrots and find sludgy, forgotten fruits or vegetables tucked in the produce drawer.

To make meals easier and waste less food, one mom decided to break all the rules about where things go in the fridge, and the result sparked copycat campaigns in other households.

KC Davis, a Texas-based mom and author, decided to make her fridge work for her instead of cramming food into designated fridge spaces where it would go uneaten.

Davis writes and posts about her experiences parenting while having ADHD, and to make her refrigerator “ADHD-friendly,” she chose to change the main areas of focus in the fridge.

The first thing Davis did was clear out her fridge door. She removed all the condiments and placed them in the lowest fridge drawer instead.

“If I want a condiment, I will go looking for that condiment,” Davis declared on camera.

That gave her valuable “front-row space” in the refrigerator door, and it also kept her from falling victim to another common trap: forgetting about produce in the fridge.

As she moved her condiments into her newly-christened “condiment drawer,” Davis explained why she chose that spot and said the produce drawer is “where things go to die and rot.”

In the comments, one person mentioned that most refrigerators have technology that keeps produce in the drawers fresh for longer.

But Davis pointed out that in her family, any fresh fruits or vegetables that wind up in the drawers are often forgotten.

“It doesn’t matter what the drawers do if it rots there,” Davis commented.

Then, Davis reorganized the fridge, making snacks and drinks the focal point for the new layout.

“What I need, is when I open my fridge and go ‘I’m hungry, what do I have?'” everything is visual,” Davis said. “Nothing is stuffed behind anything else.”

By putting each product’s label toward the front, and placing multiples of snacks and drinks behind them, Davis made it easy to see how many of each item were available.

“If I designed refrigerators, they would be six feet long, one foot deep – front row only,” Davis said.

When she revealed the completed revamp, Davis was amazed by how easy it was to see everything.

“I can’t believe how much front-row space I was wasting by cramming so much in the door,” she marveled.

Instead of being stacked with condiments, the interior door shelves contained fresh veggies, prepared snacks and her kids’ sippy cups.

Other moms were excited to try the method themselves.

“I just did this and want to cry,” one viewer commented. “I looked at my new organization and said, ‘oh my God, I can finally breathe!'”

Another mom said that the tactic “has been a game-changer” for her family.

“No more wasted produce because we forgot it was there,” she wrote.

Davis stepped back to admire her work and show off the newly-organized contents of her fridge.

“This refrigerator serves me now,” Davis said with pride.

“It’s going to make decision-making and feeding myself and my family so much easier.”
