Young Sheldon Co-Creator Explains Why Missy Thinks Sheldon Is Gay
Co-creator Steve Molaro explains why Missy (Raegan Revord) thinks Sheldon (Iain Armitage) is gay in Young Sheldon. CBS' premier sitcom recently celebrated its 100th episode with a jampacked offering. Titled "A Solo Peanut, a Social Butterfly and the Truth," it featured three prominent plotlines, but a brief interaction between the Cooper twins has become the talk of the town as it subtly addresses Sheldon's sexuality.
Out of the three plotlines in Young Sheldon, Sheldon's arc was mostly separated from the rest. Paige (McKenna Grace), his fellow prodigy and one-time crush reunites with the titular character. While Sheldon thrives at East Texas Tech, Paige is struggling at the University of Texas. She felt more frustrated when she found out that not only is Sheldon having a blast learning, but he also has friends. He decides to drop out of school and asks to use his dorm room to escape for a while. Surprisingly, Sheldon agreed; what more is that he even wanted to prepare a care package for her.
This is where Sheldon and Missy's conversation happened. Sheldon asks to borrow Missy's Sassy magazine in Young Sheldon's 100th episode. Unaware of what is going on, Missy exclaimed, "I knew it! Okay look, I'm cool with this but do not tell Dad." This has convinced fans that Missy thinks her twin is gay — something that Molaro confirmed and further explained in an interview with Deadline. That is the thought. I think Missy (Raegan Revord) has spent a little time trying to understand who her brother is and what his sexuality might be … which, as we know, through The Big Bang Theory, continues to be quite a question mark for a long time.
Young Sheldon didn't dwell long on the bit. In fact, Sheldon didn't even question his sister's quip, which was uncharacteristic since he likes to pick on small details. The fact that he didn't fully understand what Missy was saying should've led to him asking more questions. But perhaps the socially-inept genius was just pre-occupied with Paige hiding in his dorm room. Despite their tumultuous relationship, it was clear that he was worried about her, especially considering how emotionally drained she was about her life.
It's uncertain if Young Sheldon will ever revisit this particular moment in the future; after all, the show is confirmed to run until season 7, and even beyond that given how popular it is. But The Big Bang Theory already settled Missy's suspicions. In the original sitcom, Sheldon dated and ultimately married Amy (Mayim Bialik). Based on her recent guest appearance in the prequel, it appears as if the Coopers are still happily married, with more kids after Leonard Cooper.
