Authorities are asking the public for help in identifying possible suspects, Police Chief Katherine Lester told ABC News.
"We now have confirmed that we had six people killed in the area of 10th and K. An additional 10 people were transported or self-transported to area hospitals," Lester said.
The chief added: "Right now, our investigators are arriving on scene. Like I said, this is very, very preliminary, so we do not have a lot of details to share. But again, we're asking for the public's help."
Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg expressed his "shock & sadness" in a tweet.
"The numbers of dead and wounded are difficult to comprehend," Steinberg tweeted. "Rising gun violence is the scourge of our city, state and nation, and I support all actions to reduce it."
