Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick questioned the decision-making of Jadon Sancho and Anthony Elanga following the club’s 1-1 Premier League draw against Leicester City.
The Red Devils started the game with a four-point deficit to the final Champions League spot occupied by Arsenal. They had the chance to reduce the gap to just one, but failed to do so.
Bruno Fernandes had an excellent one-on-one chance to put United ahead in the opening half, but his effort was not strong enough with Kasper Schmeichel saving with an outstretched left leg.
In the second half, Kelechi Iheanacho put the Foxes in front in the 63rd minute with a wonderful headed strike, but just minutes later, Fred took advantage of a rebound to put United level.
The Red Devils had the opportunity to pile on the pressure, but the Foxes had clear-cut chances to find the winner. De Gea produced a stunning fingertip save towards the top-right corner to deny Wesley Fofana.
James Maddison found the back of the net in the 81st minute, but the goal was chalked off by the Video Assistant Referee after there was a foul in the lead-up to the strike from the England star.
United eventually shared the spoils, but Rangnick was particularly critical of the decision-making from Sancho and Elanga in the final minutes. The German felt Sancho could have taken a couple of touches after Fofana’s slip, but the attacker slashed his effort in haste.
Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford could have been on goal right at the end, but Elanga interfered play. While the youngster was deemed offside, he also happened to trip his teammate in the process. It capped off another frustrating outing for United at Old Trafford.
Following the game, Rangnick said: “The reaction to the goal was good, we came back from a goal from Fred and in the last 15 minutes we tried everything, not always taking the right decisions but we had two or three good opportunities.”
“Jadon should have taken two touches on the far post when Fofana slipped and had Anthony Elanga stayed away from that ball when Marcus Rashford would have been completely free and either probably scored or it would have been a penalty.
“We tried, so I cannot fault the team for not trying and the effort in the last 20 minutes, but obviously, it was not a result we were trying to get.”
With the result, United still find themselves three points behind fourth-placed Arsenal, but the north London club have the advantage of two matches in hand.
Their Champions League hopes are diminishing. As things stand, the Gunners will need to start dropping points for United to have any chance of making the top four.
