Pro-Am Audi Entry Makes LP Racing A Four-Car GT2 Team For 2022
LP Racing’s #88 Audi R8 LMS GT2 will return to the Fanatec GT2 European Series grid for a second season in 2022, completing a quad of full-season entries for the series’ second year of competition.
The Pro-Am entry will once again be led by LP Racing team founder, Luca Pirri, whose experience stretches across the FIA GT and GT3 European series, 24 Hours of Le Mans, International GT Open, Le Mans Series and Italian GT Championship.
For the 2022 season-opening round at Imola, Pirri will be joined will be joined by Angelo Negro in the #88 Audi. The 60-year-old claimed an Italian GT Endurance podium last year, adding to accolades from the Ferrari Challenge Asia Pacific, 24H Series Middle East championship, Lamborghini Super Trofeo and International GT Open.
Taking the wheel of an Audi R8 LMS for the first time since his Le Mans Series podium in 2019, Negro is looking forward to his Fanatec GT2 European Series Debut. “I am really pleased to finally share the wheel in a race with my friend and mentor Luca Pirri, on four wheels this time and not on two, as we used to do in the Shanghai old times,” said Negro. “A big thank you Stéphane Ratel for making it happen. I’m looking forward to a great weekend and a successful race.”
Pirri will be looking to build on LP Racing’s impressive results gained in the Fanatec GT2 European Series so far. The team leader, together with SRO CEO Stéphane Ratel finished fourth in the inaugural season Pro-Am standings, with podium finishes at Hockenheim and Misano. Ratel is also set to return to the outfit from round two at the Red Bull Ring.
“I am very happy to have Angelo race with me, we are long-time friends and he raced with us last year in our GT3 scoring a great podium in Pergusa,” adds Pirri. “I hope to climb some stairs with him next weekend!”
With the confirmation of the #88 Audi R8 LMS GT entry, LP Racing extends its commitment to four full-season GT2 European Series entries. In addition to the Pro-Am entry, the team will field a further three Am class cars, the #18 with Michael Doppelmayr and Elia Erhart and Henry Hassid in the #67 sister Audis, plus Leonardo Gorini in the #911 Porsche GT2 RS.
