A new unrated cut of director Wes Craven's cult werewolf movie Cursed is being released as part of a new collector's edition blu-ray set. Cursed, which reunited writer Kevin Williamson and director Craven (who together created the horror classic Scream), tells the tale of three young adults who discover after being mauled by a werewolf that killing the monster is the only way to avoid becoming werewolves themselves. While the film has become a cult classic since its release in 2005, Cursed was not a hit when it first arrived in theatres. Cursed is famous for major studio meddling during production which included major script rewrites and replacing nearly all practical werewolf effects with CGI at the last minute. Due to these issues, fans have long craved a director's cut of the film, which is rumored to be more faithful to Craven's original vision.
While the "Craven Cut" remains unpublished, it has been revealed by Collider that a new collector's edition blu-ray box set of Cursed is set to be released on May 10. The set will contain a 4K scan of Cursed from the original camera negative, as well as a new unrated cut of the film. It is still not the mysterious Craven Cut, which supposedly features the role played by Scream's Skeet Ulrich that was cut from the final film, but it will perhaps still give fans a hint as to what Craven's original vision may have been.
While it still remains unclear if a Craven Cut will ever be assembled together for fans to finally enjoy, the release of this new boxset does imply that studios are aware that there is a fanbase for Cursed and therefore a market for it. Perhaps one day, they will decide the time is right to release the never before seen footage shot by one of horror's most legendary directors. Until then, fans will have to be content with Cursed's new unrated cut which releases this May.
