THRUSH is a common ailment for babies, and the illness can usually be cleared up quickly with a simple treatment.
One Mississippi mom got more than she bargained for when following the doctor’s orders ended up staining her baby purple for weeks.
While administering a treatment, a mishap turned Dot Satterly’s baby purple[/caption] The Mississippi mom explained what happened in a follow-up video[/caption]Dot Satterly shared a clip of herself and her purple-stained daughter to TikTok. When footage of the mishap went viral, viewers insisted Satterly share the background of the incident.
“I honestly don’t think it’s that thrilling of a story,” Satterly said at the beginning of her follow-up video.
In early 2020, Satterly and her baby both got sick.
Exhausted and desperate for help, Satterly took the baby to the doctor and was happy when the doctor recommended something that would clear the infection in a hurry.
“They told us ‘Get some gentian violet, it’ll clear it up real quick.,'” Satterly recalled.
Gentian violet is a liquid antifungal treatment that’s been used since the 1860s to treat thrush in babies.
She went on a search, and after browsing several pharmacies, she finally found a bottle of the treatment.
“It was expensive. So expensive,” Satterly said. But she bought the treatment, got home, and prepared to give her daughter a dose.
“I was only supposed to put a couple drops in her mouth,” Satterly explained.
“I knew it was really ink-like. But I’m sick, and not thinking.”
The poor mom was tired, sick, and overwhelmed. While she was administering the medicine, she held the bottle in one hand and the dropper in the other.
Suddenly, Satterly’s daughter flailed.
“She slaps it out of my hand, freakin’ octopus arms,” Satterly recalled. “It got all over her.”
That’s the point that viewers saw in the initial viral video of Satterly and her daughter: moments after the gentian violet spilled everywhere.
“She was purple, she was so purple,” Satterly said. At first, she didn’t find it funny at all.
“I was definitely just crying,” she admitted. “The laughter was hoping nobody would notice.”
And no amount of scrubbing or baths made the stains any less dramatic.
“I just had a really purple baby for about a week,” Satterly said. “And two weeks later, she was less purple.”
Though it took a few weeks, the purple finally washed away, and everything was back to normal. Luckily, Satterly’s daughter has been healthy ever since.
“She got over the thrush very fast, never got it again, and hasn’t had any skin issues either,” Satterly said.
“You know what, sometimes, you just gotta let go and let God,” she reasoned. “It is what it is, accidents happen.”
But Satterly does have a warning message for other parents.

“Children be crazy. Don’t trust them,” she said. Anyone administering gentian violet or any other medicine in the future should keep the bottle far away from their child.
“Lesson learned,” Satterly concluded.
