After putting in two impressive displays for the Netherlands over the international break, Tottenham winger Steven Bergwijn has admitted he was delighted to be out on the field playing football again.
Bergwijn had to be content with a bit-part role under Antonio Conte even before the January transfer window but the Dutchman has fallen even further down the pecking order after the arrival of Dejan Kulusevski from Juventus.
The 24-year-old has been linked with an exit from the North London club this summer, with reports indicating that AC Milan have expressed an interest in signing the winger (CalicoMercato).
Bergwijn demonstrated his quality during the international break, netting a brace in the Netherlands’ 4-2 win over Denmark last week before finding the back of the net again in his nation’s 1-1 draw against Germany on Tuesday.
The Tottenham man thanked Louis van Gaal for putting his trust in him and admitted that he enjoyed being out on the field.
He told Dutch publication Algemeen Dagblad: “I don’t get to play much at the club. I am happy that the national coach has called me up, that is not obvious.
“You don’t forget about football. But of course, you feel that you don’t play that much. It was nice to be here again. We have a good and fun group.”
When asked if his performances for the Netherlands can improve his situation at Spurs, Bergwijn responded: “I wouldn’t know. We’ll see.
“Everyone wants to play of course. I have to keep my head up and work hard in training. Then we’ll see what happens in the summer.”
Spurs Web Opinion
The last line is perhaps a giveaway that Bergwijn has already made up his mind to leave Spurs this summer. There is no doubting the 24-year-old’s talent but I do not see how he would be able to start another match for us before the end of the season unless there is an injury crisis.
