Blake Crouch's mind-bending sci-fi novel Dark Matter is receiving a TV adaptation, with Joel Edgerton signed on as series lead. The fast-paced thriller focuses on Jason Dessen, a physicist and professor who finds himself kidnapped and transported into an alternate universe—one that offers Jason a look at a very different version of his own life. Jason quickly finds himself on a mission to get back to his own world and, most importantly, back to his true family. While Edgerton will lead Dark Matter's cast, the actor will next be seen in a very different sci-fi galaxy, returning to the Star Wars universe as Uncle Lars in the upcoming Obi-Wan series.
Per Apple, a nine-episode Dark Matter adaptation is moving forward, with Edgerton set to star as Jason. Edgerton has also signed on to executive produce the show, alongside Matt Tolmach, David Manpearl, and Crouch. Crouch will also serve as showrunner, while The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance's director, Louis Leterrier, is set to helm the first four episodes of the series.
It's not the first time Crouch's work has received a screen adaptation, with Fox's Wayward Pines based on the Crouch novels of the same name. Despite being well-received, the show found itself canceled after a mere two seasons—a fate Dark Matter will aim to avoid. Having Tolmach on board bodes well for the project, with the producer well versed in handling multiverse stories, thanks to his work on Spider-Man: No Way Home. Apple TV+ is quickly establishing itself as a fantastic home for great sci-fi, with recent shows like Severance and Foundation earning positive reception from critics and viewers alike, putting Dark Matter's mind-spinning multiverse story in safe hands.
