Israeli Security officials identified the gunman as 26-years-ol Diaa Hamarsheh, from the town of Ya’bad in the West Bank. According to the officials, Hamarsheh entered Israel “illegally”. In the past, the man served time in Israeli prison for trafficking weapons and membership in a “terror group”. All Palestinian armed factions as designated by Tel Aviv as “terror groups”.
According to the Israeli media, the assault rifle used by Hamarsheh during the attack, an M-16, was not from the Israeli Defense Forces.
Following the shooting attack in Bnei Brak, IDF decided to bolster its troops in the West Bank with four additional battalions.
No side has claimed responsibility for the deadly attack yet. However, the attack was praised by several Palestinian factions, including the Hamas Movements and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.
This was the third deadly attack in Israel in less than a week. On March 22, a Palestinian gunman, allegedly affiliated with ISIS, killed four people in the southern city of Beersheba. On March 27, two Palestinian gunmen shot and killed two Israeli police officers in the northern town of Hadera. ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack.
The recent attacks highlight some serious flaws in Israel’s internal security measures. Moreover, these attacks will likely lead to more tensions with Palestinians in the Western Bank.
