The railway project that is worth $5 billion will stretch from Termez of Uzbekistan to the northern Mazar-e-sharif city of Afghanistan then the Afghan capital Kabul to reach Peshawar of Pakistan.
The trilateral project was agreed upon in Tashkent in the past February.
Head of the investment board of the project Muhammad Ihsan during a trilateral meeting in Termez said the project is the most economical and shortest way that will connect Central Asia with Pakistan’s Karachi and Gwadar ports.
It comes as the Afghan delegation comprised of officials from the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation and Foreign Affairs visited Uzbekistan and attended the trilateral meeting of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Uzbekistan.
The railway project will not only enable Uzbekistan to deliver goods to Pakistan’s ports but will also benefit Afghanistan as the latter will export goods to central Asian countries and Russia.
