Like many adventure titles, beating Tunic doesn't mean the end of the game's content. There are a lot of puzzles to solve in Tunic, including some that are necessary for story progression, but the most difficult secrets to uncover come after completing the main objectives. Defeating the final boss will complete Tunic's story, but there are still more items to collect and a true ending to unlock after beating the game.
As soon as all the colored gems in Tunic are gathered, players will have a chance to fight The Heir. The first battle is meant to be lost, and it will result in the fox becoming a ghost. Visiting all of the Hero's Graves will allow the fox to regain their physical form, but players can also return to The Heir's arena at any time to complete the game. Defeating the final boss in Tunic will trigger in a message that allows players to either go back and look for more secrets or start over again in New Game Plus.
Most of the post-game content involves finding collectibles and deciphering Tunic's instruction manual pages as they are found. Tasks like collecting Fairies and opening the Mountain Door require button input codes, so players will likely spend a fair amount of time looking for clues and solving intricate, sometimes tedious, puzzles. However, unlocking new areas and finding collectibles is a large part of Tunic, so it's no surprise that completing post-game tasks is a difficult challenge.
Fairies are secret collectibles that can be tracked on page 48 of the instruction manual in Tunic. In order to find the Fairy instruction pages, players need to activate the golden pillar in the northwest region of the Overworld behind the Sealed Temple. The page is revealed by standing in front of the pillar and entering up, right, down, left, down, right, up, left. Collecting Fairies after beating the game will lead players to one of the final instruction pages as well as one of 12 secret treasures.
Although some of Tunic's Fairy locations are listed in the instruction manual, revealing them takes a bit more detective work. At each Fairy location, players need to enter a specific button combination which can be found by closely examining the environment or consulting the instruction manual. To collect rewards, players need to return 10 and 20 Fairies to the Secret Gathering Place. This hidden area is located in the Overworld through the large waterfall that's west of the central save point.
Although not immediately obvious, Tunic has a handful of Secret Treasures that can be revealed by entering button combinations or completing bizarre tasks like standing in water for 60 seconds or dropping golden skulls into a small puddle. The Secret Treasures are one of few collectibles, like Tunic's Gold Coins and Ability Cards, that aren't needed to unlock the true ending in Tunic. However, they add additional content to the game after beating it, and finding at least half of the treasures leads to the final discoverable area in the game.
Secret Treasure locations and solutions are hinted at throughout the instruction manual, but some will need to be discovered without any explicit hints. Finding the Glyph Tower requires the Secret Treasures in Tunic to be displayed on pedestals in a hidden room. Inside the Old House, players can go down the hall and run along the southern wall to find the pedestal room. It's recommended that players search for the Secret Treasures after beating the game so they have all the necessary equipment, such as the teleport dash, unlocked.
While the instruction manual can be used to identify many of the secrets and puzzle solutions in Tunic, there are some hidden areas that go beyond what the booklet includes. For example, there's a customization room where the fox's fur and outfit colors in Tunic can be altered. There's no indication of this in the instructions, but the room can be found by running through the trees near the curved stairs and broken fox statue in the Overworld. There's also an ability card not listed in the manual that can be collected by bombing a seemingly ordinary wall.
With the existence of secret areas outside the manual, the need to explore every inch of Tunic's world becomes greater. There may be additional collectibles, items, or Easter Eggs hidden behind bombable walls or secret paths, and it's possible there are no clues as to where these places are. Since Tunic is an adventure game full of hidden areas and puzzles, it's possible there is much more content to discover, so thorough exploration after beating the game, and trying new things like bombing ordinary walls, might lead to brand new secrets.
Opening the Mountain Door in Tunic is arguably the game's most difficult task. Almost all of the instruction pages need to be collected, and the Golden Path will need to be identified. On page 49, there's a key for the Golden Path with 25 boxes each containing a page number. Finding the solution involves going to each page listed, finding the golden box, and copying the intersecting lines onto the table on page 49. There are 100 d-pad directions to input in order to open the Mountain Door, so it's definitely one of the most time-consuming tasks in Tunic. The Mountain Door requires some of the harder instruction pages to collect, so it's likely one of the last puzzles players will solve after beating Tunic.
To assemble the instruction manual, players will need to solve most of the game's puzzles, including finding Fairies and unlocking the Mountain Door in Tunic. The game can be completed without all of the instruction pages, but the true ending will only be unlocked when the full manual is assembled. When The Heir is defeated in Tunic, a message will appear indicating how many instruction pages are missing, and players have the option of going back before the boss fight to try again. After initially beating the game, the challenge of finding the instruction pages in Tunic offers plenty of post-game content to experience.
When all other options have been exhausted, or if players are just looking for a more difficult challenge, they can start over in New Game Plus. In the regular version of Tunic, the bosses can already be tough to defeat, especially The Heir, but defeating them in New Game Plus requires much more skill. Luckily, players are able to keep their equipment and upgrades when starting in New Game Plus. The only items that don't carry over are story items like Tunic's colored gems and the Hero's Grave objects. New Game Plus allows players to experience Tunic in a new and challenging way after beating the game.
