Report: Club made ‘several attempts’ to sign Spurs man in January – Move still likely

Ajax made multiple approaches to sign Steven Bergwijn from Tottenham in January, according to Voetbal International (22/03/22 edition – via Soccer Nieuws). 

Bergwijn has found opportunities hard to come by at Spurs this season, especially since the arrival of Antonio Conte. 

He was strongly linked with a move back to his native Netherlands during the winter transfer window, with Ajax touted as leading suitors for the 24-year-old (De Telegraaf 03/01/22 edition via Sport Witness). 

Voetbal International claim the Eredivisie side made ‘several attempts’ to secure Bergwijn’s signature, but saw their efforts come to no avail. 

Conte also expressed his intention to keep the Dutchman on board at Spurs (Evening Standard), which was reinforced when he notched an incredible last-gasp double to secure three points against Leicester earlier this term.  

However, the report adds Bergwijn remains firmly in their line of sight and there is a ‘good chance’ he will finally depart Spurs at the end of the season. 

He is contracted at Spurs until the summer of 2025 after joining the club for a fee of around £27 million two years ago (Transfermarkt). 

Spurs Web Opinion 

Ajax were very interested in Bergwijn over the winter but Spurs were not too keen on letting him go. He isn’t playing much at the moment so it’s hard to see him staying beyond which is a shame, but he hasn’t really fulfilled his true potential at the club since joining.
