Squid Game Season 2 Will Have More Games, Says Creator

Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk says more games are in the pipeline for season 2. The show, which quickly became one of Netflix's most popular series, follows 456 contestants who enter a contest in order to win a life-changing sum - providing they can survive the show's deadly games. Squid Game's success was recently celebrated during this year's award season, with the show taking home, among others, three SAG awards and a Golden Globe.

But while Squid Game's success is a testament to fantastic writing and world-building, its main appeal comes from its unique and terrifying collection of contests. The show features innocent games turned deadly, making killer events out of childhood favorites like tug of war and even marbles, but Squid Game's most iconic game of all was its opening event. One of the show's most deadly games, Red Light Green Light, required contestants to stop moving when a terrifying, giant robot doll turned around. The game also created something of an unofficial Squid Game mascot out of the doll, recently encouraging a group of fans to recreate the robot in real life.

And now, showrunner Dong-hyuk has confirmed he has more ideas for games for season 2, even if he isn't quite ready to share them. Speaking to Deadline while at the PGA Awards, Dong-hyuk says "there will be more great games, that’s all I can say". He also confirmed that season 2 is still in the very early stages, saying “I’m just still brainstorming and collecting the ideas for Season 2. I haven’t even started with the writing yet”.

Of course, fans will no doubt see familiar events return, but new games would be a welcome addition to Squid Game's deadly contest. With such a vivid and inventive concept, Dong-hyuk has endless options to make season 2 as successful as its initial outing. It does, however, seem like more Squid Game is a ways off, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, as fans of the show will no doubt prefer Dong-hyuk to take his time bringing future seasons to life.

Following season 1's cliffhanger ending, Squid Game could have easily moved away from more games and gone in a completely new direction. The series ended with show lead and sole survivor, Seong Gi-hun, out to end the games once and for all, despite receiving a warning by the game's leaders. With Dong-hyuk already planning his next lot of deadly games, it sounds like Seong may find himself wrapped up in more horrifying Squid Game contests in the future.
