Thor’s Mjolnir Twist In MCU & Marvel Comics Was A Shocking Coincidence

In both Marvel Comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thor's hammer Mjolnir is undergoing significant changes with a very similar twist that is a pure coincidence. This week, Thor writer Donny Cates revealed that Mjolnir being destroyed and reformed in his run of the hero and the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder is a shocking coincidence and wasn't planned in synergy with the MCU. In previews for the future film, Jane Foster wields a reformed version of Mjolnir that's quite similar to the one that debuted in last week's Thor.
Thor recently was forced to destroy his hammer in Donny Cates and Nic Klein's epic conclusion to the God of Hammers saga. In the Marvel Comics story, Thor used the Odin-Force and powers to melt and shatter his hammer, which in turn took down the living embodiment of Mjolnir who was destroying the Ten Realms after bonding with Mangog. However, when Thor woke up from his months-long all-sleep, it was revealed his hammer was rebuilt into something new as Odin spoke to him through the reformed weapon. Funny enough, a similar storyline seems to be happening in the next MCU Thor film.
On his Twitter account, Thor writer Donny Cates responded to a tweet asking whether the new version of Mjolnir that appeared in Thor #23 was influenced by the Thor: Love and Thunder that Jane Foster's Thor will wield in the upcoming film. The hammers are both reforged with energy pulsing throughout the cracks. However, Cates stated the fact they were similar was an "absolute coincidence," as he admitted he was shocked when he saw the movie design. Cates said that the hammer twist was planned in runs for "years."
While there hasn't been an official trailer for the upcoming MCU film, merchandise from the movie revealed Jane Foster's Thor will wield a reformed version of Mjolnir. So, it's an understandable question to ask whether it was intentionally planned or just a coincidence. In this case, Marvel Comics and the MCU just happened to have similar ideas, which will surely play out differently.
While readers know the basics behind how Mjolnir was rebuilt in the Marvel Comics version of Thor, it will be fascinating to see how it happens in the MCU. The twist happening in both Marvel Thor properties is simply a coincidence, even if Marvel is making more effort than ever to synergize the comics and movies.
