Russian State Duma comments on the idea of a NATO mission in Ukraine
Commenting on the proposal to deploy a NATO peacekeeping mission to Ukraine, Dmitry Novikov, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, said that considering the experience of OSCE peacekeepers in the Donbass, it would be naive to discuss it, this could lead to a prolongation of the current situation and an increase in casualties among civilians.
Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister of Poland, head of the ruling Law and Justice party, Yaroslav Kaczynski, proposed sending a peacekeeping, but at the same time armed, NATO mission or a larger mission to Ukraine to bring peace and humanitarian aid.
“When evaluating such proposals, you always evaluate the experience that is already known to the world community, that part of it that monitors the situation. We saw that the so-called peacekeeping mission of the OSCE representatives on the territory of the Donetsk and Luhansk people’s republics, which was designed to ensure the implementation The Minsk agreements, including the ceasefire, did nothing to ensure that these agreements were implemented, hostilities ceased and people would stop dying,” Novikov told RIA Novosti.
The parliamentarian noted that at this stage, this proposal only outwardly looks like peacekeeping, but in fact it can lead to unjustified losses.
“Given this sad experience (OSCE in Donbass), it would be very naivete to talk today about the measures that organizations that include such countries as Poland can take. All this can only lead to a prolongation of the situation (currently existing), and exacerbation of representatives of Nazi formations that continue to operate on the territory of Ukraine, hiding behind the civilian population, which means that all this will lead to more deaths among the civilian population,” Novikov also said.
