A Proud Boys memo reveals plans to seize several US government buildings around US Capitol on Jan 6, report says

Henry "Enrique" Tarrio, leader of The Proud Boys, attends a protest showing support for Cubans demonstrating against their government, in Miami, Florida on July 16, 2021.
  • A memo details a plot by the far-right Proud Boys gang to seize US government buildings, reported the NYT.
  • The memo was reportedly found in the possession of ex-group leader Enrique Tarrio.
  • Tarrio was indicted on conspiracy charges in connection with the Capitol riot last week.

A memo found in the possession of former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio details a plot to seize government buildings in Washington, DC, on January 6, 2021, The New York Times reported.

Entitled "1776 Returns," the memo reportedly outlines a plan to take control of the Supreme Court along with six House and Senate office buildings, though not the Capitol complex itself.

It reportedly describes the need to assign 50 members to the far-right gang for occupying each of the buildings on Capitol Hill, with some members to create a distraction outside while others infiltrate and seize the buildings to stage sit-in protests.

Sources told The Times that it was unclear who authored the document, but it may have been provided to Tarrio by a former girlfriend.

According to the report, the memo contains a detailed timeline, and in some respects mirrors events that actually transpired last year on January 6, when a mob of Trump supporters attacked the Capitol in a bid to halt Joe Biden's certification as president.

Insider has contacted Tarrio's attorney for comment.

Tarrio was arrested last week along with several other members of the Proud Boys and charged with conspiracy in connection with Jan 6. The memo was mentioned in indictment documents, but the Times report adds more detail about what the memo contains.

According to the report, Tarrio is not accused of attempting to act on the plans outlined in the memo on January 6. Tarrio was not present in Washington DC on the day of the riot as he had been arrested in an unrelated case 2 days before, but several Proud Boys members were involved in the unrest.
