Russian spies are feared to have posed as foreign fighters in order to leak information from a Ukrainian base destroyed in a missile strike.
Three British ex-special forces troops were feared to have died following Sunday’s devastating attack at the base near Yavoriv – just six miles from the Polish border.
Moscow said 180 ‘foreign mercenaries’ had been killed in the airstrike, but Kyiv said 35 died while 134 were wounded.
It has been hard to independently verify figures on fatalities during Vladimir Putin’s invasion, which has now entered its 20th day.
The International Centre for Peacekeeping and Security as long been used to train Ukrainian soldiers, often with instructors from the United States and other Nato members.
The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed no serving British personnel were killed or injured in the explosions.
It is unknown which part of the special forces the three Brits feared dead used to serve in. But it is believed they were not part of the unit of foreign fighters undergoing training at the base at the time.
Now Ukraine’s SBU intelligence and security agency is investigating the possibility that Russia had an insider at the Yavoriv base and was leaking out information.
A source close to the situation told the Daily Mirror a Ukrainian Army guard saw a man running away from the site holding a laptop shaped object, before the strikes.
One of the 1,500 foreign recruits at the base is suspected of sending coordinates and information to Russia.
Ukrainian and Western intelligence agencies suspect Russian GRU and SVR spy agencies had ‘turned’ foreign fighters at the camp.
An MoD source told the Mirror: ‘But there is no doubt in the minds of many that there were insiders within the camp who were compromised and who were helping the Russians.’
They said there are believed to be ‘no serving British military personnel inside Ukraine as politically that would be extremely controversial’.
However, last week it was reported that four UK soldiers were feared to have ‘gone AWOL’ to fight against Russian troops.
It has caused panic at the Ministry of Defence, with security chiefs fearing Putin may claim Britain has entered the war if any of its personnel are captured.
Defence Secretary Ben Wallace, who served in the Scots Guards, has previously urged Britons not to travel to Ukraine to join the fighting as he said the ‘very dangerous’ situation could lead to them being killed.
He has said he does not ‘want to see British people killed any more than I want to see Ukrainians’ dying.
This was after Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said she would ‘absolutely’ support British nationals who chose to go to help fight against the Russian invasion – although she’s since rowed back on this claim.
Last week in the Commons, Wallace warned that any serving personnel who go to Ukraine to fight ‘will be breaking the law and they will be prosecuted when they return for going absent without leave or deserting’.
