The UK has sanctioned a further 350 Russian targets over Vladimir Putin’s brutal invasion of Ukraine.
The huge list brings the UK in line with the EU and means more than 1,000 individuals and entities have now been hit.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov and foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova were among the latest round of elites, worth an estimated £100 billion.
Oligarchs Mikhail Fridman and Pyotr Aven, who amassed their wealth before Putin came to power, were also put under sanctions.
World leaders hope the financial measures will deter the Russian leader from pressing on with his invasion, as his troops move closer to Kyiv.
Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said: ‘We are going further and faster than ever in hitting those closest to Putin – from major oligarchs, to his prime minister, and the propagandists who peddle his lies and disinformation.
‘We are holding them to account for their complicity in Russia’s crimes in Ukraine. Working closely with our allies, we will keep increasing the pressure on Putin and cut off funding for the Russian war machine.’
Earlier today, a ban on the export of luxury goods to Russia was announced by the Chancellor.
Rishi Sunak also imposed a new 35% tariff on £900 million worth of Russian imports, including vodka, metals, fertilisers and other commodities.
‘Our new tariffs will further isolate the Russian economy from global trade, ensuring it does not benefit from the rules-based international system it does not respect,’ Mr Sunak said.
Roman Abramovich, the outgoing Chelsea owner, was one of seven Russian oligarchs sanctioned last Thursday.
The move froze the billionaire’s planned sale of the west London side, which was given a special licence to continue operations under limited terms.
