Nubia Claims Wonder Woman's Ultimate Title in Queen of the Amazons
DC's Amazon queen, Nubia, is returning once more in a new series: Nubia: Queen of the Amazons will spin out of upcoming Wonder Woman related titles. It marks the fan-favorite royal's next chapter following her coronation.
Nubia may have debuted in 1973, but she has undergone something of a rebirth with her recent adventures. She has become a prominent player in the Infinite Frontier era following the death of Diana. This prompted Hippolyta to take over her daughter's role in the Justice League while Nubia earned the title of Queen of Themyscira. Nubia is thankfully showing no signs of going away anytime soon as a new miniseries has been announced by DC.
Nubia: Queen of the Amazons is a four-issue miniseries that has the creative team of Stephanie Williams, Alitha Martinez, and Mark Morales. Nubia's reign is slated to continue this summer, following Nubia: Coronation Special. This will be the titular heroine's second miniseries of Infinite Frontier, and it's great to hear that it will be from the same creative team that has been telling the story within Nubia and the Amazons. There will also be two additional variant covers. Jae Lee will draw an open-to-order variant, while Alitha Martinez creating a 1:25 variant. These have yet to be revealed, but based on the art seen for the Amazons as of late, fans of the Wonder Family will want to keep their eyes open for them. It wasn't very long ago that DC announced Nubia: Coronation Special, which follows after the events of the currently ongoing Wonder Woman event, Trial of the Amazons. This special is also slated to include Nubia's official origin, which has been in question since the heroine's return in Infinite Frontier. The effectiveness of her reign may currently be in question, but it seems like Nubia will prove to be a woman worthy of her title.
Wonder Woman's family has been expanding their reach recently, garnering a much bigger focus than they have in recent years. This is especially true for Nubia, who could have easily flown under fans' radars the past few decades. Despite her prominence in Wonder Woman lore, she wasn't treated as a mainstay character, but her new adventures have been impactful on the DC Universe and her importance within this new status quo of comic canon. With Diana resurrected and Wonder Girl Yara Flor established as a next-generation hero, DC appears to have huge ambitions for the future of the Wonder Woman line, and Nubia's role as the Amazons' leader is right at the center of those plans - fans can see where Themyscira is led next when Nubia: Queen of the Amazons debuts on June 7.
