Pundit predicts Tottenham star will be feeling demoralised after injury update

Noel Whelan has claimed Ryan Sessegnon would be feeling demoralised after suffering another injury just as his Tottenham career finally appeared to be taking off.

Sessegnon had been starting ahead of Sergio Reguilon at left wing-back over recent weeks and the youngster was demonstrating the kind of quality that convinced Spurs to pay £25m to sign him from Fulham back in 2019 (Goal).

However, the England Under-21 international went down with an injury late in the first half during Tottenham’s 5-0 win over Everton last week.

It has since been confirmed that the youngster has a hamstring problem is expected to be out of action for a month (Alasdair Gold).

Antonio Conte has expressed his frustration at the youngster breaking down every time he seems like he is making progress (Football.London).

Whelan insisted that Sessegnon will find it difficult to accept his predicament, particularly since he seemed to be finally making progress at Spurs.

The former Leeds United striker told Football Insider: “You’ve looked at him (Sessegnon) and gone: ‘Wow, he’s back to his best’.

“This is the player that we’ve all been waiting for. This is the player that we thought they’d signed from Fulham.

“He hit the ground running and we were seeing the best in Sessegnon in terms of goals, assists and his full performances.

“Now you see the intensity that the Premier League gives to players. Unfortunately, it’s another setback at the wrong time. He was just getting into the groove again and you had that stability in your backline.

“Sessegnon was flying and finding his feet. You’re getting into your groove and you’re getting into those real, 100 per cent fitness levels that you need as a Premier League footballer to perform week in week out.

“All of a sudden, this really disappointing news happens to him. It’s got to be demoralising for him because he’s been hampered by injuries.”

The one positive is the fact that this is not a reoccurrence of the same hamstring problem that Sessegnon suffered previously (Alasdair Gold). So, this does not seem to be a case of a chronic issue from which the youngster had not recovered sufficiently.

However, the 21-year-old needs to stay injury-free for majority of the next 12 months or so if he is to save his Tottenham career as the club will likely start to get frustrated with him if he suffers another couple of injuries.
