Elden Ring's Demigods Hide a George R.R. Martin Easter Egg
The lore of Elden Ring features a few George R.R. Martin Easter eggs, which shouldn't come as too much of a surprise since the famed fantasy novelist helped craft the backstory. FromSoftware and publisher Bandai Namco Entertainment began teasing Martin's contribution to Elden Ring lore upon announcing the title in 2019. The author most notably helped shape the make-up of the Lands Between and even had a hand in naming the open-world locale, according to Game Director Hidetaka Miyazaki.
Similar to the Soulsborne games before it, the ins and outs of Elden Ring's mysterious world are often told through item descriptions and the like. As such, players who want to fully understand every facet of the story and its larger-than-life characters must explore each nook and cranny they come across while navigating the Lands Between. Some of the most fascinating details to be found revolve around Elden Ring's various demigods, all of whom bear quite the interesting connection to George R.R. Martin.
Elden Ring's demigods all have names that start with the letters G, R, or M, as noticed by PC Gamer's Jonathan Bolding. In fact, the names of the core four characters - Godfrey, Rennala, Radagon, and Marika - spell out George R.R. Martin's initials, GRRM. The connection doesn't stop there, either. Elden Lord Godfrey's and Queen Marika's three children were similarly named: Godwyn, Morgott, and Mogh. Rennala and Radagon were so obsessed with the letter R that their descendants go by Radahn, Rykard, Ranni, and Renna. In addition, Radagon's marriage to Marika subsequently begot Malenia and Miquella. And who can forget the black sheep of Elden Ring's Godfrey and Marika lineage, Godrick?
So there you have it, George R.R. Martin's name is quite literally spread across the world of Elden Ring in more ways than one. It's pretty inventive, too, and subtle enough that the vast majority of people wouldn't notice unless someone else pointed it out. Who knows what other Easter eggs he may have thrown into the lore?
Elden Ring hit store shelves late last month on February 25, quickly becoming a critical darling and commercial success. Sales data remains under wraps for the time being, but NPD numbers recently revealed that FromSoftware's latest action RPG already counts as the best-selling game of 2022 in the United States. Notably, Elden Ring sits behind Call of Duty: Vanguard as the game with the second-highest launch month sales in the past 12 months.
