After a future Wolverine comes back in time to undo the reality of his present, he reveals that his kids are doomed to repeat his iconic deaths.
Warning! This article contains spoilers for X Deaths of Wolverine #4
As Wolverine embarks on two opposite missions across time from two separate points in history, he reveals that his children are destined to die in the most ironic ways possible. Wolverine died many times throughout Marvel Comics, in both the main timeline and in alternate universes. In his latest comic series X Deaths of Wolverine, those brutally iconic fatalities Wolverine suffered have seemingly been passed down to his children.
In X Deaths of Wolverine #4 by Benjamin Percy and Federico Vicentini, the Wolverine from the future who has been taken over by the Phalanx is fighting the hive-mind’s influence over his actions. He has teamed up with his children who are helping him on his mission to kill Moira MacTaggert so that the terrible future the Phalanx Wolverine is from never comes to pass.
While on the mission, Wolverine explains to Daken, Scout, and Laura that each one of them are destined to suffer horrific fates, ones that Wolverine himself is all too familiar with. Daken is killed by a Sentinel blast, Scout dies after she is ripped in half, and Laura has the worst fate of all as she is tortured and experimented on for an extended period of time before her body finally gives out. Each of these deaths are reminiscent of some of the few times Wolverine has reached his end. Just as Daken was killed by a Sentinel blast, Wolverine died the same way in the dystopian future of Days of Future Past. Scout was ripped in half, just like her father after he battled the Hulk in Marvel’s Ultimate Universe. As for Laura’s torturous demise, Wolverine went through something just as excruciating while he was unwillingly a part of the Weapon X Program.
As readers are given a glimpse of the ironic deaths of Wolverine's children, they are also able to relive those similarly terrible moments in Wolverine’s own life through the other half of this ongoing storyline. In X Lives of Wolverine, Wolverine’s consciousness is sent back in time into his past bodies throughout many different points in time to save the life of Charles Xavier. While the Wolverine in this storyline has come back in time to undo his future, the other is sent further into the past to preserve the present. With those missions into the past, fans are able to witness some of Wolverine’s most heartbreaking and excruciating moments with the character, and now they know that his children are destined to endure similar moments of pain and suffering.
The irony of the deaths of his children aren’t lost on Wolverine, and are assuredly driving factors in his mission to save the future. He experienced everything they are destined to go through, and knowing first hand how cruel and painful those experiences were, he wants to free his children from those fates. However, unless Wolverine is successful in his murder mission across time, fans will have to endure all over again the terribly ironic and all too familiar deaths of his children.
